Thanks for the report peter... i must say this...catching bait on a Tiagra 80w is a bit too much...

This championship format for the comps is not functional.... after the 3rd/4th leg there's no point in participating.... the boats falling behind just loose interest and you end up will only a handful that still have a chance to win the championship... and also if you missed the first few legs (like I did!) they won't let me do individual comps...

oh well...

How do the points work John F?

It seem its mainly the guys catching Marlin that win, so going after species does not really help?!

In previous years they divided the pool of about 13 species into 3 different tables (billfish / "prime" gamefish ie. dorado, YFT, wahoo / rest of gamefish ie. barracuda, cuta, etc)... teams that scored on the 3 different tables had bonus points... going after species was good!

I think this year they went back to a single list of about 13 species and each species gets assigned a certain number of points/kg.... and obviously bills get very high points per kg....

You can catch 10 species of fish but if I catch 2 nice specimens and a saily, I win...

Nice one brother, please tell me what you are doing pulling Rappies with a 130W??  :crzy

I am sure its nothing serious with your engine.

just talked to the mechanic...he mentioned he was able to start the engines but he suspect I must have a mix of contaminated fuel in...and he will have to clean the carburators any time soon before the weekend
hopefully all will be ok after

Nice report JohnF & Peter B, do you know if Manuel will be around +/- 15th December? Is he permenant in Maps now or still between Jozi and Maps? Want him to "check over" my outboards, no service required... before revamped Ski Vee's maiden voyage.
Happy days!

Last leg of the Clube Maritimo championship was fished yesterday. Lots of bills and good gamefish:

Nakisai: 3 marlin;

Dan Dan: 1 marlin

Wahoos in the +25 kg class and yft in the +20 kg.m... Lot's dorries.

peterblaced lauched today looking for yft and dorries... Will radio him later...

outing for me was a flop...weather man played his tricks...gave us bad weather for Sat and good weather for Sun...and weather was great Sat and terrible Sun...
we launched at 5:00 and headed for the fishing grounds with choppy sea and Eastern winds..wind was in our face so we had some take offs...not good!!!!
getting close to the fishing grounds my crew (2 newbies) got scared being out on the big blue...swell was not that big but for them it was...for me perfect sea for fishing
so we decided to search for good port around the island and wait for sea/wind to calm down...and we worked the shallow water around the island with some rappies but no luck
at 11:00 we decided to call the day off and headed towards Maputo

no fish and 105lt for 58nm
both Pescador (single engine) and Yellow King (2 engines) returned to Naval with fuel problems...same for Kambaku on Saturday on both engines so they had to be towed back
Yellow King (on 1 engine) and Kambaku (on 2 engines) have damaged fuel pumps...it's tricky here hein!!!

Look at the positive side of things... you got another opportunity to test drive your boat on less than ideal conditions.... this can only be good!

launched today around 4:30 in the morning together with Caluca (another invader cat)
when doing the ramp maneuver heard from owner of Caluca that his boat has a engine failure...(engine stalls when in gear)...
I don't understand this guy...he is on holiday, spends every day at the club...knows he has one engine malfunctioning...but still makes it to the ramp knowing that he will not launch properly
don't need to say that he gave up going to the deep after a short ride (on 1 engine) at the bay
 :dunno:

sea was a bit choppy at the bay (even with the 1knt forecasted)...but nothing much compared to last Sunday outing
today I was testing Marcos props (13 - 17pitch) on my 60hp Yammis...and I'm very impressed with the test...I'm now debating on getting those props or similar size I have now (13 - 15pitch) but on 4blades...still thinking it will put much stress on the engines
result was increase on the top speed of about 3knts bringing down the revs on 300rpm...and cruising speed more economical
today I did 75nm on 125lts of petrol...which gives an average of 1.6lt/nm

plan was to go up North...but getting to Baixo Ribeiro we spotted that the forecasted calm sea was not there...so I decided to make a change on the plan and headed towards B24
getting to the area was very easy as sea calm down and we had very flat seas
weted the lines at 6:40...a set of 4 rappies and worked the area for a while
at this time of the day contacted L Hooker (in the area since Wednesday) and he was in the area with no fish at the moment

got my first strike and within 30secs I had a very small bonnie...that stupidly (or not) released immediately
I say stupidly cause after the release I realized I could have used it with the traces I had aboard

I decided to head towards Baixo Jeremias area and to work a bit the deeper marks around Jeremias so I changed the spread to soft konas small and medium size, a heavy bullet head and a large jet head

getting to one of the southern pinnacles of Jeremias I had a nice strike  on the small kona and fought the fish....untill line snapped right on the snap swivel knot when Miguel was getting ready to gaff the still very wild and active YFT

all new knots (double line with aussie plait) connecting the snap swivel with a double uni knot...all directed by Marcos and tested on the scale after when setting up the drag
we did it together last week

if you pay attention to all my reports here...it's a common issue I've been having
the bigger coincidence here...and something I realized after the frustration analysis (I've been doing) is that it was always on the same rod
1 long line release (about 100mts off) and 2 short line releases (at knot or loop)
so every outing I had aboard Maguro...I had a stress
Marcos suggested I might have a faulty spool of line...so I was thinking of replacing it tomorrow
Prego suggested not to think about it...just replace it ASAP!!!
and I will do it tomorrow...after doing some organizing at Maguro's new home at Naval

at the end of the day I had a nice ride and it was nice being out one more time in the blue...a bit dirty with temps ranging the 25º's
on the way back to Maputo I stopped at a really nice beach...wild and waiting for us for next weekend

got to Naval by 13:00

checked with L Hooker and they were luckier the we were...between the 2 boats they caught a dorie, 10kg cuta, 2 YFT and 3 small kingfish...also mentioned that the fishing was though...lets wait for his report soon
tomorrow we will meet at Naval upon they arrival with ETA 7:30

Chakra lost a BIG blue yesterday on the +500 m. They came back with 3 dorries (one was 20 Kg).... good reports of gamefish (+15 kg couta; 16 kg barracuda, etc) at the northern reefs....

MAXIMVS will be launching on Saturday... need to "stock up" for x-mas... not making a plan but will secretly pack a few big guns and ammo for that pinocchio...
