Lekker Vid Shaun.

We had a trip out yesterday, game plan was mainly bottoms, did not get tons but the ones we did get were quality, nice fresh fish for the pan and mates. Water was warm 24.5 even at 65m the sinker comes up warm. Whilst out had a bus of a yellowtail swim past under the boat, eeish and we weren't prepared, FFF managed to get a popper in the zone it followed it a short bit then turned and gone, live learn hey.

Launched Saturday and did my usual snoek hunt, managed to get a few them moved to the bait spots, put out live baits and within minutes went away only to be eaten after 10 min, went back to the spot put another live bait same thing after about 15min eaten again so I packed up and went home. Good to meet up with Fritz, Chris E, Ant and big D. As well as Dugongboy who I hope you came right today. Was a great day out, till next week end cheers.
A bad days fishing is better than sitting at home moping.

Watched the fight so only launched at 7:30, water was too clean so guys battled for snoek and lots blanked, found a slightly dirtier rip up past the airport and ended up getting one of around 2kg and dropped another about the same size, in these conditions the fluro trace(no steel above the skirt) is a must!! :hnthnt:
Spent another 3hrs trying for couta - great conditions, right spot, great baits......nada!!  :-( that's plenty hours put in areas that normally produce this time of year and not even a pull :dunno: That said I suppose that only 22 caught by 350+ boats in the comp tells a story!!
Saw a bus  :brnz: under the boat a few times, ignoring the live shad......waiting for something bigger no doubt (bat

Just got back from Natal Champs held at Pennington over the weekend. There were seven teams comprising the main zones on the Natal Coast, with a great weather forecast for the 3 days. For once the Pennington launch was pretty tame and all boats launched safely on all three days.

Day 1 - we puzzled a bit for live bait and instead of running up to Aliwal decided to work south at the Mzimayi pinnacles to try for a tuna or wahoo. A lot of the boats ran north. We set a spread of lures and had three bonnies very quickly. At around 9am I had an enquiry on my tuna feather (running shotgun) the fish gave a few short runs and came to the boat fairly easily, we thought it was a small tuna or a bonnie and got a great suprise when a 10kg wahoo eventually came to the gaff! The rest of the day was quiet, two boats got some nice dorado, and there were two couta weighed - one of 13kg and one of 19kg.

Day 2 - I swapped teams for the day and we changed our gameplan a bit, we founf good livebait off Park Rynie and headed up to Scottburgh to try for a couta. We had great baits out but no takers. We ran up to Aliwal Shoal and set a spread of lures to find a tuna or wahoo. ON the way we passed a jetski fighting a sailie - was nice to watch the fish jumping and the angler doing his best to stay on his ski. We got a few small bonnies and then ran to the 19fa line at Hospital Road to drift. We set up a drift but conditions were way too still - no wind and no current (the baits just went straight down). We got harassed by bottomfish eating our livies and soon decided to call it quits as a big SW was forecast and we were quite far north. I made the call to put out the lures and move south to Mzimayi. After 5 minutes of trolling my feather went away again on the shotgun and a sailie came out the water, he pulled around 300m of string on his first run and gave a great account of himself. After 15 minutes we had the fish at the boat, pulled him up for a brief pic before successfully releasing him! My first sailie on 10kg line - very stoked! We reset the spread and 20 minutes later we got a 15kg tuna. The day was already made, but more was in store. After resetting the spread, my close deep diving lure got knocked but didn't hook up and 10 seconds later Doug's rod screamed off, another sailie! This time it came in quite easily and we got it to the boat in just over 10 minutes, Shane took the leader and brought it up next to the boat, unfortunately as he reached for the hooks the knot on the Rapala popped, but the fish swam away safely and the Rapala was hooked on the outside of the mouth so all should be ok. What a great day, the SW came and we headed to the beach for a few   !!

Day 3 - The toughest day of the comp - near perfect conditions with flat seas and no wind. Unfortunately the fishing was terrible with only one tuna, a kingie and a 22kg wahoo coming out between all the boats. We blanked for the day, only caught 3 small sarda-sarda that were below minimum weight.

Once again it was a great comp with good anglers and great humour. Will definitely be back next year.

Some pics of our fish:
