Launched this morning for a quick (4 hour) session as a deckie on Oba Oba... sea was flat and the water kinda dirty... we tried a bit of everything (deep for bills about 2 hours), drifting with mackies for couta, jigging and speed trolling... NOTHING!

Only got 1 halfbeak tail cut off 2 mm from the hook (arrrghhhh!!!!!!) and a strike on an x-rap (probably a small tuna) that we lost!!!!

Anyway, it was good to be out in the blue again!!!!!

@ John F, what was the water temperature out there?

Always lekker to be out there :win:

Don't know... the boat's fishfinder doesn't have a temp sensor... it didn't feel very cold though... I'd say ~23o C...

Long overdue, feel free to point out anything that could be done to revive this fish. Suggestions are welcomed.

Marlin release attempt
Its difficult to say really without seeing the fight time, what happened boatside etc, but the only thing I can say is that the fish should have been held upright by the dorsal from the begining, but other than that it sometimes hapeens that way and fish die, must say the fish did not look like it was going to revive any time soon and already had the "vacant" stare, I think it was a goner at this stage already, unlucky but its the nature of the business. Well done on attempting to release the fish however  (clap) (clap)

As Shaggy said, I think holding the beast up right by its dorsal fin is key. What we also do to check for a sign of life is stick our hand in its mouth and the bite tends to get stronger when they start regaining strength.

At least you tried putting back which is  :ayb unfortunately it did not make which = some lekker fish on the table.

Still yet to taste sailfish, how is gents?

@ Prego

I was out last weekend, the temp in the bay (at Maritimo) was a mere 19deg C.

Further out it was hovering between 21.8 and 22.4 deg C.

Hope that helps

Sailfish tastes very good ,We got some from fisherman at Sodwana after a fishing comp ,apparently the fisherman ate some of the marlin and it made them very sick . Was very sad to see all the dead billfish ,the people didn't know what to do with all the fish. :-(

:tkx: Searaider, how did you prepare & cook it?

Yip its sad how many fishermen still have a 'fish for today' mentality still.

Its the mains on most Mauritius Hotel menu's. They eat tons of it there.

We should start a rumour that because of lead and red mercury poisoning all the Indian Ocean game and pellagics are toxic.

Report on the past weekend.... It was Moz's independance day (25 June) and a neap tide, so we decided to spend the weekend at Inhaca island and do so bottom fishing and family+friends get together...

We launched at 11ish on Friday, taking advantage of the calm sea that followed a Northerly... it was expected that the wind would swing towards a hard SE by the afternoon so we had to rush... therefore no fishing that day! Got everything ready for the next day and jumped into a few (maybe too much) beers!!!!!

On Saturday, the wind come later than predicted and at 2:00 am it was howling! Only died at about 11:00... so we launched for a short afternoon session. Went to 3M (4.5 nm NE of Portuguese island). The fishing was poor with a few emperors, 2 good size shad and other species! The 4 of us managed about 10 kg... anyway it was a good session with good laughs and oily sea.

Supper and drinks that night were served at Marujo Snack Bar (at the beach and must say Ginha took good care of us!)...

The next day the sea was as flat as a space telescope mirror... and the fishing was dismally worst than the day before... water was really cold (18-19o C)!!!!  Anyway we had a few good pulls and my dad lost a fish that never stopped taking line!!!!!

At the end of it all, we ha a good time at Inhaca and a Sunday supper of fresh fish to finish in good style!!

A few pics...

I love that snack bar - the peri peri chicken is absolutely out of this world! Will definitely visit when we are over there in a few weeks, although it does get expesnive when you have to pay the island fees, plus a mooring fee etc. Is the mooring fee true by the way or just a rip-off?
Wow, the water is really cold then - I hope it warms up a bit before we arrive. We have plenty off things we want to try.

Sorry, I must say that the water was at that temp early in the morning and then went up to 21o C!!!!

Mooring fees are paid to the kids to look after your boat! It's not an official fee. I paid 250 Mt/day... if you spending just a few hours, it should be less than that!

The island entry fee is a bit of a rip off... it should be charged only if one enters a reserve. in this case, either Ponta Torres (opposite Santa Maria), Portuguese Island (the whole island) and Barreira Vermelha (aka coral gardens). If one is going to the hotel area (WHICH IS NOT A RESERVE!), one should not pay!!!! They do it because they are just lazy (and it's the main entry point to the island)!!!!!

What is the difference between coral gardens and Ponta Torres John F? Coral gardens is the snorkel spot, but I thought that from the seaward marker from there it was not reserve and we where allowed to fish - and I also though that bit was Ponta Torres?

Ok here is a quick map... I could not find a proper official map so I quickly drew one... the area shaded in yellow are the reserves (marine and terrestrial)...

Oh wow - I've always had it wrong! The area marked as Ponta Torres is where I thought Coral Gardens where, and while we knew that that specific bit by the rocky ledge is a reserve, I have fished quite a bit off the beach on Inhaca from the start of the Hell's Gate channel (opposite Carlos') all the way up the beach.
Good to know now :)

At the end of the rocky ledge there is (or should be) a marker buoy and also a board that marks the end of the marine reserve... from there towards the channel you can fish no problem... the rangers will let you know...
