with holydays planned ahead and at least 1 month (+) since the last outing I decided to head out for a slow day
Sunday forecast was great with nearly no wind so after feeding/changing/putting to sleep the (not so)little one I headed to the club...set the boat and launched by 9:15
although plan was to start and run the engines and wet the hull I also decided to pack the popping and jigging gear...so my plan was to spend about 45min before/after the tide change at cockburn area
getting to bx ribeiro I noticed some birds diving and some fish at the surface...so I decided to start with the popping activity...and after the 3rd or 4th cast something went wrong
rod tip guide was broken...on a shimano kaiabutsu GT rod
I suspect the knot going trough the guide did the damage...but I question...how come a GT rod can be so sensitive and brake so easily?
this is a rod that never had a fish on...so no stress...and already damaged...argh
I'm starting to be annoyed with shimano rods (also had a issue with the tiagra rod guides)

so off I went to my final destination...and getting to the spot I noticed some action at the bottom and started jigging...and ended jigging after nearly 2h30 trying my luck
there was pelnty action but no takers...only a prodigal chasing the squid jig like crazy under the boat...and at a certain structure on very low depth I could see the jig at the bottom and 3 fish coming out of the structure and playing with...me

so I made my plan of running the engines...next time will be only in August (hopefully) as I'm heading for the northern hemisphere

water temperature was 21.4ºc and ended up doing 40nm on 75lt...nice fuel economy (1.875lt/nm)...not counting normally I take 250lt on a fishing day...at least 2 people aboard...tackle...and off course...full hatch
tested the engines (still have my overheating alarm on the port engine when going full tap)...managed to clock 34knt

my good friend comment...although you didn'd fish anything...you are good at taking photos

After 10 h at sea only got a skipjack that was taxed almost immediately. Went to search for couta in the drops and only got two rats and one barracuda. Bottoms were nowhere to bee seen. Caught one decent rockcod and that was it.

Seems like winter is definitely here and gamefish went away. Time for some maintenance on the boat and gear.

I have read that July and August is the worst time of the year for fishing Inhaca island area. We dont have much choice in the time of year we go on holiday so it is what it is.
Will we be waisting our time trying to go out fishing or are there specific fish to target this time of year?
Our plan A is spinning with plugs in hells gate for GTs
Plan B will be trolling deep diving lures around Santa Maria reef?
Would this be a good game plan or a waist of time?

The GTs and other kingies will be around... you just need to put in the effort... play with the tides and time of day...

I would suggest you broaden you game plan a bit with regards to the offshore fishing... try a combination of xraps, surface lures and drifting baits. And also consider exploring other areas (Jeremias, Baixo Danae, south of Baixo Santa Maria). Put in the time and I'm sure you will get some bites...

Okay thank you John. I have read alot of posts on this forum and found a few coordinates for the reefs you mentioned. I will give your advice a go.

Actually I launched yesterday Martin. Must have been the best worst fishing day I had in the last 365 days... the sea was flat as a pancake all day!!!! Check the pic below... that's Inhaca and Machangulo in the background

Launched with my brother to do a bit of bottom fishing inside the bay. Went up and down like crazy (69.2 nm)... we only caught one rockcod and a batfish. Then out of total desperation trolled for an hour, and we were blessed with a rat couta.

Eish... painful.... other boats also strugled (both trolling and bottom fishing).... spearos are also battling to even see fish...

Oh well...

I hear you bud... Was on the local dam 2 weeks ago... threw plastics & rappies at the bass, but not even so much of an acknowledgment that they were there. Still, a beautiful afternoon in an idyllic setting. The cooler box was somehow empty on my return.

Spoke to spearos and also heard from the comercials... nothing out there. Guys have done the distance almost to bilene and come back with 2 or 3 yft...

Time to service, refurb, maintain, lube, sharp the hooks and get ready for the new season...

In the mean time we get early evenings in the bay like this.... (peterblace sent me this pic on Friday)

after being out of the water for too long (holydays and big engines service) yesterday we decided to launch for a pre season fishing session
all my fishing buddies failed on me....so my last resource was trying to convince JohnF not to launch on his boat (he was also setting up his boat) and to join me

for that

plan was to meet (JohnF and Ju)at 5:15 and launch...nearly no wind...flat seas...but a big fog made us go slowly to our fishing grounds...we had nearly no visibility (I would say 15m) all the way to BX Ribeiro...then from there it was clear sky...and that's where we started spotting whales...which at first glimpse we thought it was a tree log...very quite...mother and calf...we get to about 10m from them
on a note...I have never seen so many whales like yesterday...all over the place

on the 20mt mark we put some bullets on the water on the 50's and we kept cruizing at 20knts and by boia perdida we took those heavy artelery out and started throlling for some cuta and tuna...but that area was dead (that time of the day)
we headed out to Poco and not long after we had our first strike and our first fish aboard...a nice YFT

getting to Poco we had a double strike and landed a bonito...and got our first cirurgical line cut
going over that same area same story happened...long run...change of direction...cirurgical line cut...this happened for 3 times
our thoughts...

...but who knows

area got quite dead and we decided to head to B1 (cuta territory)...set the 50's on with the bullets and of we went
again...area was too dead (we only managed to catch a lost YFT)...and those 2 where itching for some bottom fishing so they start dropping their bait and catching some good fish...very fast but and productive drift
I gave it a try with the drop shot...and managed to catch a grouper

we then decided to start our way home with lines out...headed to the 30mt mark and just before taking the lines out (deadline was set for 15:30) in 20min time we got a 2x, a 3x and a 2x strike of cuta...that was the call for a nice pre season fishing day

in the end engines runned very well with just a hickup at the end

Thanks for the "dictatorial" invite... you know I love working the deck on any boat... cleaning fish, sorting out smelly bait and stuff

Great day out! Massive presence of whales all over.... in, out, shallow, deep... yoh!. Great to see but freaks me out a bit. Gotta keep an eagle eye on these sea trains all the time. Also we got to come close to leatherbacks, loggerheads and probably green turtles - several times!!!!

Still got to settle with those 'hoos... MAXIMVS' motto applies fully here: "they will not lose for the delay"

Season has been opened. Let's rock & roll!
