White metal spoons
« on: November 02, 2014, 05:07:32 PM »
A white metal spoon, properly manicured to its full potential, must remain one of the most gorgeous lures, even in today's age of all the modern lures available on the market. An old chap that's been fishing the Beachwood area for many many years caught a 18 kg Garrick on one about 2 weeks ago there. This is basically the only spoon he uses. He showed me how to shine them up to perfection. Shine it up with the back of a knife. Most people stop after this! But he showed me how to get the full shine out. After the knife he uses the side of a square nail varnish glass bottle to polish the metal to the shine of a mirror! I manicured my two spoons that I always carry with me today and you can literally see your face in the spoon. They are on my mental casting list for tomorrow's early morning spinning session.

So basically , you ' rough' up the spoon with back of knife and polish with the glass bottle .

You can use steel wool instead of the knife , too . you then can even go further and use metal polish , available at a Midas .

Bet we will get more tricks for other members .

Have loads of spoons , think its time I have a go and clean them up.

Absolutely! I tried steel wool a while ago. It gives a much smoother, but dull, finish than a knife, that tends to scratch the spoon. You can see the scratches on my bullet spoon in photo.  But I did not know about the glass bottle then! So steel wool might be perfect for first step before the glass polishing.

:hnthnt: Two nice spoons.....jip tin is the best .....clear glass bottle and then toilet paper ...the toilet paper gives it that mirroe finish...On those two spoons I would put a short shank 7/0 live bait hook on and take the swivel off...... :clfoto:

I'm sure a buff would also work and probably quicker as well.
Early birds catches the most worms. Early worms catches the most fish.

If you're stuck on the beach, just use some sea sand and scrub it... works like a bomb!

I've caught more fish on a plain metal (silver) spoon than any other lure. A shiny spoon works a charm for  :shd:

One thing I noticed with that S-bend spoon in my photo is that the braid start to twist on itself. I cannot understand this, because I use a swivel, so even if the spoon rotates in the water it should not transmit this through to the casting braid?? As soon as I switch to a surface plug, couta casting spoon or stickbait the twisting gradually disappears. Any idea what is causing this?

Stainless steel is extremely hard and tough. One needs a hard buffing wheel like filt. The one I used for buffing white metal was the floppy, soft one.
