Natal Snoek on lures
« on: March 08, 2011, 11:07:01 AM »
I am so over blanking  on the Bluff (apart from endless blacktails!) - and have seriously considered taking up knitting - until I saw Barry Wareham's article in the latest Rock Surf and Deep

Has anyone caught natal snoek like Barry does - or can you only do it if you are a "boss" angler like him?

Can anyone advise a mere mortal like me? Can you add to the article? Like what are the best lures to use and  - most important - where to fish for snoek around Durban?

I am fortunately not bound by work, so I can go anyday during the week  - so I can avoid the crowds

I'm not alone!!!

Barry told me he also had success with purple coloured bullet spoons. I can't remember if he mentioned that
in his article. I saw a lot of guys catching Snoek with those lures he mentioned in the article  at Vetchies.
The snoek seems to move around - last week-end I only saw 1 Couta & skate come out. (before 8am)
Further info on you query from other guys is eagerly awaited...

PH - glad I am not alone too!

Where at Vetchies? Off a ski or off the shore? I am shore based - get sick on a ski!!!

I NEED to catch one of those things - otherwise I retire from fishing!!!!!

Haven't seen the article but Barry is a top angler. The best way to catch snoek (overall) is by trawling sard fillets from a boat or ski, sure, you will get the days that spratspoons/clarks/minieyes/minnows/etc.... work well but all told fillets WILL do better!! Snoek are thick at the moment, especially off the northern beaches, Hyper/Virginia/Peace Cottage so now is a good time to give it a bash, in fact almost anywhere just off backline should work........3 - 7m deep.

Unfortunately off ski's & ski boats just outside the sharks nets.
Ie quite close to shore as DB said.

I have to say that on some days the bay can be crawling with snoek and they won't touch anything.

Have you seen snoek jumping off Vetchies Ziggy? I'm not sure it would be worth fishing for them unless you know they are in the area we generally see them for the first 2 hours after first light.

Hi Ziggy
I might just be able to help you out on that. You can use small bullit spoons 1oz or a shallow v back also in the 1oz range. If you need to see the spoons give me a call on mtn2three4ovifeonine, I make spoons for the guys in the club and for myself and I promise you that they are cheaper then any other tackle store. If the weather plays the game you can join us this comming weekend.

No I have no but a buddy fishes off hhis ski there and has been telling me - how accessible are they at Vetchies - off the rocks on the pier (not allowed there right!). I suppose I will just have to paddle out then with my buddy

Most of the places mentioned on the list you provided, the swell can't be to big as the snoek will not come into the breaking wave area but will behind the wave line. At beechwood or the wreck the swell has to be very calm so you can throw over the wave line. I have caught all my snoek out at sheffield ie Dave's rock and a the ledges just south of Christmas Bay and North of Dave's Rock. You need to get your lure into the deep water.

hope this helps.
