Durban - Five people were injured in a boat accident in Park Rynie in the south of KwaZulu-Natal, paramedics said on Monday.
“A fishing vessel went out at the Park Rynie ski boat base this morning [Monday] for a day of fishing when they were smashed by an unusually large wave,” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.
He said paramedics arrived on the scene and found the injured lying on the beach.
“Three of the men had sustained serious injuries while two escaped with only minor injuries.”
A trauma doctor and a helicopter were called to the scene.
“One of the seriously injured men who were on holiday from [VanderBijlpark] Park in [Gauteng] was airlifted to the Netcare St Augustine’s hospital,” said Botha.
The other injured were stabilised and transported by ambulance to the Netcare Kingsway hospital.
On Sunday a female diver was severely injured on the head when a boat capsized in the Umkomaas River mouth during a diving trip.
A group of 11 divers were on a diving trip when the incident happened.
The Eastern Cape disaster management team was also searching for six people, including a 7-year old child, who disappeared after a boat capsized in a dam in Dimbaza near King William's Town.
That accident occurred at about 13:40 on Sunday afternoon.
