To all our ski-boating friends, take care out there. Remember when in doubt it is enough reason not to go out!

Large wave smashes boat, 5 injured
2011-02-21 20:29

Durban - Five people were injured in a boat accident in Park Rynie in the south of KwaZulu-Natal, paramedics said on Monday.

“A fishing vessel went out at the Park Rynie ski boat base this morning [Monday] for a day of fishing when they were smashed by an unusually large wave,” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

He said paramedics arrived on the scene and found the injured lying on the beach.

“Three of the men had sustained serious injuries while two escaped with only minor injuries.”

A trauma doctor and a helicopter were called to the scene.

“One of the seriously injured men who were on holiday from [VanderBijlpark] Park in [Gauteng] was airlifted to the Netcare St Augustine’s hospital,” said Botha.

The other injured were stabilised and transported by ambulance to the Netcare Kingsway hospital.

On Sunday a female diver was severely injured on the head when a boat capsized in the Umkomaas River mouth during a diving trip.

A group of 11 divers were on a diving trip when the incident happened.

The Eastern Cape disaster management team was also searching for six people, including a 7-year old child, who disappeared after a boat capsized in a dam in Dimbaza near King William's Town.

That accident occurred at about 13:40 on Sunday afternoon.

We've had some really large swell, any surf launch today would have been a tough one!

And I should add, the Sharksboard didn't launch at many spots today (including Park Rynie) - always a good reason to stay at home :)

big waves NO problem as long as they give you a proper gap. I hate launching when the sets are close together.

I don't mind hitting the first foamy but as soon as I have to start hitting curlies I rather make a Vidal breakfast in camp

Both commercial operators, a charter and a dive boat.

This is exactly why I decided not to do any surf launching with my charters anymore, the reason is that you get pressed for money and then take the chance as you need to choose the lesser of 2 evils, the swell or the bank balance. This is a no-no situation, and better to be avoided at all times.

Very Sad for all invloved and my sympathies to all involved, passengers, crew and boat owners.

Wise words those, its never easy staying on the beach but its just not worth it at times.
