IGFA Rules for Game Fishing
« on: January 14, 2011, 12:14:18 PM »
With all the comps coming up I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread on the IGFA Rules.

Leaders:
The combined length of the double line and leader shall not exceed 20 ft (6.1 meters) in line classes up to and including 20 lb (10 kg) and 40 feet (12.19 meters) in line classes over 20 lb (10 kg) for saltwater species.

Double lines are measured from the start of the knot, braid, roll or splice making the double line to the farthermost end of the knot, splice, snap, swivel or other device used for securing the trace, leader lure or hook to the double line.  A double line must consist of the actual line used to catch the fish.  For saltwater species, the double line shall be limited to 15 feet (4.57 meters) for all line classes up to and including 20 lb (10 kg); and shall be limited to 30 feet (9.14 meters) for line classes over 20 lb (10 kg)

The leader shall be limited to 15 feet (4.57 meters) for saltwater species in line classes up to and including 20 lb (10 kg), and 30 feet (9.14 meters) for all line classes over 20 lb (10 kg).  For freshwater species, the leader on all classes of tackle shall be limited to 6 feet (1.82 meters).

IGFA doesn't differentiate between wind-ons and normal leaders. take the total length of your wind-on and ensure it is equal to or less than your double line plus normal leader as according to IGFA rules Mike

Its all the same, as long as total length does not exceed the limit its fine.

The pakula website has a host of information.

Line Class Double Wind-on Leader
12lb 4 feet 9 feet x 100 lbs 5 feet x 150lbs
16lb 4 feet 9 feet x 100 lbs 5 feet x 150 lbs
20lb 4 feet 9 feet x 150 lbs 5 feet x 200 lbs
30lb 8 feet 20 feet x 150 lbs 8 feet x 200 lbs
50lb 8 feet 20 feet x 250 lbs 8 feet x 300 lbs
80lb 8 feet 20 feet x 300 lbs 8 feet x 400 lbs
130lb 8 feet 20 feet x 400 lbs 8 feet x 500 lbs

Shaggy, that adds up to 36ft, but the total can be 40ft, please explain.

basically you want to be well withing the IGFA limits for tournaments, and with big drag settings and mono leader of say 400lb and a wind on of 300lb plus your standard 80lb nylon it has been known to stretch up to 3 ft!!

so you would feel like a bit of a chump losing the cash or record due to that, exteme but it has happened.

Thank you for clearing that up.

So double line 8ft (2.44m) - 80lb
Wind on 20ft (6.1m) - 300lb
Leader 8ft (2.44m) - 400lb

Total 36ft (10.98m)

Standard wind ons are 10m, according to this you must cut them down, can one not substitute wind on for double line, or will this make this illegal. i.e Wind on 26ft and double line 2ft.

no mate it can be made up completly as you prefer it as long as the total does not go over 40ft.

Eish.... Now I am trying to learn a Bimini with an 8ft loop instead of the usual 2ft I have mastered.

Any suggestions to do this easier.

I either get someone to help out or put the loop over a door handle or a cleet, do the twists, then bring al the twists towards me, then stand on the loop behind the twists and tension from the ground up and roll the bimini as normal, or use an aussie plait thats easier to do on your ace.
