Storms river mouth rest camp
« on: August 20, 2019, 06:57:52 PM »
Hi all,

I will be camping here in the September holidays. This vaalie would like to know if one can fish here as it is a national park? If not what would be the closest place that I could wet a line, taking the Mrs and want to introduce her to some mini R&S fishing 🎣 😁.

So going for a small 7ft rod with a basic trace ( https://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=10134.0 ) prawn/chokka to tease the little ones in front, more action and excitement for her.

Just want her to catch something & experience some fun

No you cant.. Marine reserve no take zone..
Closest place is just outside the reserve at natures valley, very user friendly place, nice beach and lagoon to fish. Lagoon is small and often closed but small fish there to keep one busy. The other side eastern side of the reserve is eerste river which is very sinker hungry and pretty fished out and not so user friendly although very beautiful and definately worth a visit sometime..the lagoon @ natures is perfect for the little 7ft rod and your intended excursion. ;) Throw a little rapala or stickbait too if you see mullet getting smashed, I've caught and released loads of little leeries in that little lagoon, there is generally a shoal of a hundred little guys that move around the system together, if you find them you get a smash of note but you gotta find them or let them find you. One decent shoal in the place, used to follow them with the kayak, little cobbies cruise with them. Release the fish in the closed system. The salt river walk is also worth a days mission but check the route and tides beforehand. It can get super sketchy/impassable on high tide on sea route and on land route on way back or there you can get super lost taking the wrong fork and end up miles away. Done both, following a local "who knew the route" so just saying..First little bay as rocks start on west side of beach also good spot for shad who should be around then and a bass rod with a drift bait half pillie, next to the rocks inthe white water will nail them..

There are of course little secrets to the place as well..I've watched very large cob herding and smashing mullet in the saltriver in crystal clear water, but not in any spot where you could reach them but ja there are secrets..If you do fish salt river mouth please take a rubbish bag with you and fill it up to take home as the locals can be absolute pigs at what is an absolutely spectacular fishing spot. There is also amazing beach fishing, and if you have the gear and know what to do large resident crackers swimming the many reefs. Please release all breeding stock, if you fish the sea around the area there can be large fish around. The gulleys on the east side also at times fill with gulley sharks, large guys, in crystal clear water but those guys like pets although I think the guys fish them..for release..LOL Unlike the guys further east in river mouths who, eish, go recro-mercial style on the gulley sharks and have a market somewhere packing cooler boxes?! Shame..anyways..really beautiful and epic place and area, the bird life too is spectacular..Fish eagles, kingfishers of all species and all the forest and fynbos birds.. The parrot sanctuary on the way to plett is also well worth a visit with the young ones.
