This is incorrect. The placement has everything to do with the spool, not the shaft. The 'nobby' arrangements on the tournament reels are as distant from the shaft as possible and only affect the spool.
aluminium is not magnetic it's conductive, there has to be motion involved to generate the eddy currents
@ BAUMANNATOR humbly beg your pardon and here and now concede that You ARE right and I was WRONG. Please forgive me for not believing you. I did not understand the processes regarding the movement (of conductive, non-magnetic material), which then generates the "Eddy's" that then causes the secondary magnetic fileds in the conductive material which then acts in an opposing manner to the initial magnetic fields. Now I do (I Hope?), thanx to Chritosch, Sparky and Mike-Pike, thanx Guys and a huge " ful" sorry to BAUMANNATOR again and to all those, Hooch, that I confused with my lack of understanding? Guys?

Guys?Henk, its do able on the shaft or the spool. With bakelite you can do it on the shaft and on the new modern reels do it from the inside of the housing.
LGF, no need to apologise. I was amped when I first got into trying this on a reel. I see quite a few people are getting excited by the possibilities....that is why I shared my mod ...to get people to think out of the box.
