Ok, so the verdict is they work!!
However, it takes a LOT of playing around to fine tune the reel. I took too many reels with me - too many options, but they definitely work. Put 2 magnets in my Fathom and couldn't get over 50m!! :shk  Took 1 out, still too much brake force. What I worked out is that it's not so much the size of the magnet that makes the difference, but the proximity to the spool - the closer to the spool, the greater the braking force. So, with the Fathom, I put 2 thinner magnets in, (further away from the spool), and eventually got things to roughly where they should be. Still not prefectly satisfied, as I believe I'm still losing distance due to the force of the magnets. Need to a lot more fine tuning...
I also did work on the Trini 30, Saltist 50.. Body tired from hundreds of casts... eish.

So,the way I understand your findings are,that one shouldn't even bother with thicker mags as their breaking force on the spool will be too much,whereas thinner mags further away from the spool has enough breaking force on the spool...? :dunno: Are mags with thickness of say 5mm stronger than mags of 2mm thickness in same diameter,should be,right?Should one then rather play with the thickness of the metal mounting plate for the mag,than to put thicker mags in?

Those sizes would be fine, in fact those were the exact sizes we had in mind although we couldn't get all the sizes but a couple of each of those would be all you need.

I think the only size you will need in magging a reel are the 2-2.5mm thick magnets. Those 5 mm thick magnets will only work if they are spaced well away from the spool. In the Fathom, a 1mm glued base plate, with 2x  separate 2mm thick magnets worked, only just, maybe still a bit strong. Whereas 2x 2.5mm magnets were wayyyy too strong, because they were closer to the spool. With the 2.5mm magnets, I couldn't get past 50m, with the cast control fully open!
So yes the trick is to increase the size of the base plate, rather than put extra mags in.
 
With the bigger reels, Saltist 50 etc, the same size magnets are less powerful, so need to play around with those spacings still..

thanks Reefs,that's what I gathered from reading your findings...so there's no need to go buy 5mm thick magnets,just get some 2mm mags...maby even thinner too :win: :tkx:


p.s:did you only use one weight sinker today,if so what weight was that?Would one need stronger mags if casting heavier sinkers..?

I did not find the weight of the sinker made a huge difference. The speed of the spool creates the eddy currents that the magnetic field reacts to. Set the mag to the lightest sinker weight,

REEFMAN, I found that the larger spools are better controlled with wider magnets for increased surface area. Now you willll understand why I qas so adamant thhat guys using braid on conventionals will really benefit from this mod. You really can put the ' brakes' on a spool to prevent the whiplash you get with braid.

Hi guys thought i would share my saltist pics.

Magnets from magnetech, found also that the closer to the shaft,the less the braking force.

I manged to test them and am really impressed with the result.

I used a stanley knife blade,I outsourced some stainless plate cutt to size to fit into the space of the saltist,just waiting for it then I can collect it.

Found magnetech quite helpful.

Measuredthe clearance between the spoool and frame pocket to be around 4mm if it can help anyone.

Guys so what is the overall verdict? Does one get greater distance? Can one whack it with confidence? Does the mags really assist to prevent / minimize over-winds? Overall is it worth the trouble?  :dunno:

Hi guys - I'm new to this forum, but certainly not new to the topic of magnetic cast control systems and have posted about it on other forums before.

About two years ago, I went through the same process as many of you here, to develop an magbrake system for my little modified  1530, but wanted a system that required no drilling of holes in the sideplates of my reel(s), that retained the clicker, had no bits sticking out and leaving the reel looking stock standard from the outside.
As the reel might be directly be exposed to saltwater during wading or "swimming" during reef fishing, the materials had to be as saltwater resistant as possible  AND I wanted a system that would look professional, neat and a modification that would actually add to the value of the reel for later possible resale purposes, even on expensive reels like the Trini and Trini A's and not lower the value because of a home made appearance.

On top of this, I wanted my system to be fully adjustable, with a wide range of adjustability in small increments, if at all possible !

This was a tall order, but after much research, material and design testing and many hours of casting, I developed just such a system for most  models and sizes of the popular brand multiplier reels on the South African rock and surf scene.

Will post some pics and tell you a little more just now ...

It is called the "MAG-IT" Magnetic Cast control System and is available in a wide range of models, covering most popular brands, models and sizes.

This is the model for the Saltist BG and older Silver generation with one model covering the 20/30 sizes and another, the 35/40/50's.

Situated  in the RH side of the frame, as the left sideplate is very "busy & cluttered" with the clicker, cntrf flange and ring already crowded in there.

The magplate was chosen to be of substantial size, as this allows for full adjustability - yes it's fully adjustable, by moving the magnet(s) to the outer radius of the reel, the braking effect acts on the larger radius, providing more potent braking and as more aluminium comes through the magnetic field, the efect is also more.
Additionally, as the spool sidewalls/flanges are dished, they come closer to the magnet(s), the further you slide them outwards.

The plates are CNC lasercut from a special marinegrade  stainless alloy, that is also higuly magnetic to provide a secure connection for the magnets to adhere to.
It was easy to find marinegrade and easy to find magnetic stainless, but a real battle to find this one with the right bias between in this case higher corrosion resistance than #316 and still highly magnetic and then in all the different gauges to accommodate the different clearances in different reels.

Here is a pic of a single magnet fitted to the plate, all lubed up in marine grease for additional saltwater protection and ready to go !

Here is the smaller model magplate fitted to the Saltist BG 30 - on the topic of magnets, please remember that not all "rare earth" magnets are created equal !

I only use the "normal" neudenium magnets when I'm forced to by  some reels having very limited clearance between the spool and frame and the special highly corrosion resistant permanent magnets that I prefer, are too thick or powerful to operate at that short range.

This is the little reel that started it all - my modded 1530 !

The same magplate fits the 1530/2040 and Speedmaster IV and now sadly discontinued narrow spool Speedy III !

In this case, fitted inside the leftside sideplate behind the clicker ring.

This position allows plenty clearance between magnets and spool, this is why I used six magnets in three stacks of two on top of one another in the innermost position - this allows a wide range of adjustments with small increments, as you slide the magnets outwards to gain more control.

The dots on the magnets indicate polarity and i fit them next to one another with alternate polarity to prevent them from fighting one another for space on the magplate - when fitted like this they uctually stabilise each other.
