Does anyone know hoe up to date Google earth is when using it?

Example: If I use Google Earth for an area when it is lowtide - will it help much?
only thing that I want to add is that reefs and rocks wont move obviously,so there you can use Google earth, but sandbanks, gulleys, gutters etc.on sandy bottoms change all the time,so there G.earth won't help. The easiest way to notice deeper water is to check for water that's bluer/darker with foamy water either side(sandbank).Usually rolling white water is where sandbanks are because waves break there as it's shallower...

p.s:remember to use the cred. system,as Lenny and others gave you good information... :clwn

Best advice you'll ever get regarding fishing , just fish my bru . You guys are lucky up there to have plenty of  job hungry for lures .

Theres no easy way , don't over think you plans , just get that lure in the water , on the right conditions , and keep at it , you might blank far another couple of outings , and then one day you will find a ' pattern'  that will produce fish , and well then your sorted ! I can't recall how long it took me to get my first one , but i know it did not come easy , but once i fine tuned my tactics , there was plenty of Kob .

Bubbleboy go look in the forum under saltwater lure angling and read Tommo's article "cob on lure" I doubt if you will find any better. Short but packed with guidelines in my opinion. I still have to catch my first cob on artificial but I am going to go with this article on my first attempt.
Early birds catches the most worms. Early worms catches the most fish.

Orca & Charteuse Paddletails works for me at Swarties. I've even gotten a Cobbie on the "fake" Onde Onda on a medium to fast retrieve (was gooi'ing for leerie).
So far i haven't had much success with bucktails, still learning as well. But I'm sure I will get into it.
Don't get to fish as much as I would like to (so there lies MY problem)!

Hey m4kes

I am talking specifically for surf (probably should have mentioned that  )

I have caught a few minor leerie and cob on the artificial stuff - So I am looking for the bigger boys

My bucket list to catch is as follows (Most difficult at 1)

1. Yellowtail from the side
2. 20kg Cob from the side
3.10kg Leerie from the side
4. 10 kg Cob from the side

As you can see - I set high standards for myself  :hehe:

I can relate to that bucket list.
As far as surf is concerned, so far only elf on double slim spoon.
Lost 2 plugs down Wells Estate side after some hard takes. Suspect it was leerie/garrick.
Lost a clone lure as well in the surf, still haven't figured that one out yet.
Also got a Spotted Gully Shark at The Pipe on Orca Paddletail.
But like you none on my list as yet.

The yellowtail you will get at st Francis point or even cape st Francis at the light house. For the cob I will fish Sundays or even vanneriets in a easterly wind. For the leeries I will hit the surf in a westerly on gamtoos.

I can never remember the guys name , but YOH , we fished the point for tail , making tons of casts .

While this guy got his lunch box out , lite up a siggie and just sat there looking at the ocean , i never knew him then , and thought , this OH , is strange ...  Then out of the blue , he puts in a cast , and low and behold VASSSS , first cast , we must have made 40 to 60 casts already with no joy . So we land his Tail , super stoked / duk viskoors  because we are skimming , the fish are moving in closer . and what does this guy do , washes his hands , and goes and sit on the rocks again , after  a while , again , same story , gets up , makes a cast , and VASSS . could not believe it , he told us that he could spot the fish and gave a long explanation ... but never worked for me ....

For the yellowtail you will have to be in the right place at the right time. The cob would be a bit easier.  The are more predictable.  Been a year since I have been to Sunday's but on my laast vissit to home there were afew very nice spots that you could fish on low tide close to the mouth. For high tide the better spots were about 45min to 70min walk up the beach. On vanneriets side just to the right of the mouth there was a nice spot to spin and slide. About 600 to 800m to the right there was a nice high tide spinning spot. You need to put in the time to see the spots on low tide to see where your structure lies. Gamtoos you can get the leeries any where from the pole where you get thrue the deuns to the mouth. The cob spots are a to the left and also a nice walk. Van stadens you can hit the surf to the right. There is plenty of spots and uselly plenty of duckbulls too. If you put in the time and effort you will need some one to take the picks.

Time at the water is the only thing that will help you in  the long run with spinning. You will work it out quickly when you walk the  beach and keep your eyes peeled. All the time's that I have been successful  with Garrick I have been able to spot them in the waves. It is sometime the  smallest disturbance the will give away their presence. I have not been  successful with cob yet. I love the top water smash too much. Maybe end of June  I will target them more frequently.

Of Course

Must put in the time.  Luckily a friend of mine bought a setup today, so at least I have another partner option.

Anybody got an idea how to retrieve the above? I bought it because it looked pretty.   :lolo:

I am no Pro , but was taught by the PE guys , and have caught a large number of Kob on Lures , ,ai;y the old Havocs , and lately the Clones and Paddletails , like I told another  guy today , spoons work very well , but for some reason its just not my forte , I have seen friends getting fish on spoon under my nose and me NADA.  I taken a couple of fish while the others are using spoons , I got them on PD tails .

1st thing , the swell must not be too big and the water not too turbulent  , meaning fish when the conditions are right to fish with lures , or lets say more conducive to retrieve a lure .
If theres too much water moving around , and current , you will not be able to present you lure properly it WILL twist and roll , and no KOb will eat it EVER , believe it or not

Accurate casting , and reading the water will be essensial too , you have to put your lure over areas where Kob ly and wait for a meal to pass.

Another way to put you lure in the strikezone for longer is to fish Parallel with the channels , on the edges , Kob patrol these edges when they are actively feeding  , by putting you lure along the edge your chances are better to encounter a Kob .

Slow down your retrieve , 99% of guys fish too fast , for Kob , they are lazy buggers and will not go through too much effort to get a meal . The tendency I have seen a number of times , once you have your retrieve slowed down , and you start to get pulls , you will find that they smash a lure in many many diffent ways , but the skelm bite is a tap , tap , you have to stay in contact with your lure via your rod tip at all time otherwise the Kob will just spit it out again  ,they tend to engulf a lure and spit it out VERY quickly if they chew it and feel hey this is not a Mullet ... before you can tighten up .
Then theres the plastic bag bite , it feels like you have a plastic bag hooked and just feels heavy , and if your lucky a headshake gives him a way . then you get the smash properly , like we all see on TV and your just VASSS without a doubt , and your drag goes for a couple of meters ...
Check you hooks every trip and during fishing trips , you will not believe how blunt the Sand can make you hooks blunt , this is also a issue that does not ,  get enough attention , don't ask me why . A SHARP HOOKS is a good hook .

If you throwin PD , bounce the jighead on the bottom , along as you stay in contact with the bottom every now and then , you can even pause your PD on the bottom for a few seconds , give it a twitch , and let it flutter back to the bottom [ i know the a dlocks are masters in fishing PD's flutter . it works for them and they have caught loaaadsss of job on lure , I have not been so successful with a flutter retrieve , but my retrieve is works for me , so why change it .

The first Kob on Lure are the hardest , try to go back to the spot you got the first one , unless its washed closed , and spend some time there . EC are a mecca for getting proper KOb on lure . GREEN with envy .
What plastics are you fishing size colour , jighead size ? Do you make use of a fluorocarbon leader , sometime they are finicky and the FC does the trick .

ENJOY

At Bubbleboy.

For Cob I will slow my action down, very slow twist and jerk actions because Cob are bottom and very slow feeders.

Here's a small description about the lure's action. The Shiverstick 125 has a vibrating, shivering action when allowed to sink through

the water column & a strong side-to-side action when twitched and retrieved.

This is a place I fished Sunday  - I felt that the water was too shallow.  Please comment.

The 2nd pic is some of my lures
