On Sunday Martin/Doc, Homes, Herman and myself fished the morning out towards Vaal de Sioleh in the Vredefort dome past Parys. The venue was very busy, it seems the guys are amped to get onto the river this season. The fishing was slow early morning, I tried the usual lies without much success. Decided to try the very fast deep water channel and it was like someone flicked on the fishing switch. Personally I managed 8 yellows and 5 muddies in the net, lost count of the amount of fish that pulled the hooks and got completely smashed up by 3 busses. 3 of the muddies landed were sizers, easy in the 1.5kg range and one yellow was a good fish, guesstimate about 2kg. Not sure of Martins tally but I could see him upriver into fish all the time. Homes was very rusty and lost plenty fish. Flies that produced for me were the BlingBling Caddis on control and small unweighted Humpy's Favourite on the point. Awesome morning out and a super day to kick off the season, sorry but I didn't have a camera for pics, just one phone pic of breakfast with the boys.

Not Rory , but the nice thing about the Vaal is you don't need top end gear.

Most 5wt rods from entry level , a reel that can hold 50m backing a 5wt floating line will do.

Have a look at the Xplorer classic 2 and Stealth Bomber range . 9ft rod will do but a 10ft rod gives you that little extra reach .
