deepblu a 5/6 is perfect with floating line. September and October seems to be a good time to target big Yellows, but you catch them (Smaalmouth) all the way up until April or so before they start moving to deeper pools and calmer waters...

For a 1st Vaal trip I would recommend Silverstrome , easy to find , easy fishing and not that far from Egoli .

You looking at +/- 50 bucks for the day at Strome . We only do the fly thing but sure soft plastics could get you a  :yellow: or 2 .

Strome is R100 per car per day... I know the guys get largies and even smallmouth Yellowfish on paddletails and minnows, so I am sure a small peeler crab could work!

You only pay R100 at Strome if you smell like Weed and look like Parkour or Skateboarding Junky  :crzy

Late afternoons are great, we have had some of our best success between 11am and 2pm at Strome though, they love the orange hotspot ptn and brassie combo...

Fished the vaal yesterday just downstream of Parys. On arriving there were muddies spawning in all the shallow glides. I then decided to just fish the deeper runs and try to stay away from the shallows. As always there were a few okes foul hooking spawning muddies. Luckily they got tired of the muddies quickly and went of in search of yellows in the deeper faster water.

Fishing was not cast for cast but the quality of the fish made up for it. Got 2 nice yellows early in the morning in a slow deep drift both in the 1.5kg range. Then got broken of a few times by what I later saw were barbel. Landed one in the 2kg range out of the same pool later.

Got 4 big muddies in the main river and a nice feisty yellow also in the 1.5kg range that took me into my backing 2 times in the main river running down stream.

The day was ended with my pb yellow in the same pool i fished in the morning. I do not know the weight but know it is bigger than 2.3kg.

Best flies were san juan worm and black control flies
