Hi Lenny how are things looking for this weekend.

Just trying to work out how anyone could possibly confuse bank steenbras with white steenbras. They look about as different to eachother as white steenbras and red steenbras. One is a fingerfin and one isnt. Eish. Maybe shoot him and then say you thought he was a springbuck...


The more stories I hear like this one the more I wish that a fishing permit was something you had to pass, not buy like a drivers license. They have a system like that in place in germany. At the same time I wish that the laws we had in place were policed properly. I mean we have some fantastic laws, but they mean nothing if no one obeys them and then they get away with it every time. How hard can it be just to obey the law.

we need a EASTERLY , currently its a easterly , but will not last longer than this afternoon , it has been blowing the right direction for the past couple of days , and the sea is big and ruff . I have been busy with other things so have very limited time to fish at the mo . give me a call should you guys come . get your lead and wind-on from me .

This weekend its supposed to be strong easterly wind the whole weekend and then monday is nice again. Is that a good thing if I wanted to go fish struis monday or tuesday?

2 to 5 days of Easterly or South easterly then its GAME ON !!!!!! yep I would fish and most Prob gonna give the old Paddletial ago when the water has some decent colour [ after the Easterly .

Hey lenny

It's a pity that this is the case. That is to a large degree why my fishing circle is pretty tight. I'll share information but thats where it ends...once guys have been given a little rope the hanging starts. Good luck with all the suspects and keep up the good work on the thread!

On the plus side...struisbaai skins are around the corner and a couple of us will be there in full force. Looking forward to good days fishing and a festive evening!

David... the East in Struis is generally a SE which is a good wind, it moves the current E to W and normally warms the water as long as it does not blow more than about 20knts or so. It is also good for fishing and is against the prevailing westerly swell and can make the sea a bit lumpy. The true east is BAD, it cause serious churning of the water and tosses things up properly - it is not so affectionately know as the BEAST from the EAST.
The SE/E also pushes the swell directly into Struis harbour causing a wash across the slip and resulting in many a skipper having an incident while trailering his/her boat.
 
The SW generally blows in warm clean water but can make the water sterile but if not too strong is a good wind for blue water conditions - if it blows for too long it stops the E to W current messing up the fishing. This is when I really pay attention to the surface water temp charts!
The NW is the wet weather wind and normally has and offshore effect in Northhumberland bay and Struisbaai's resulting in the surface water (warm) getting blown off and cooler or cold water coming up - Better know as upwelling. This is often quick in this area as the thermocline is not normally deeper thank 20-40m in the area depending in the time of year. Shag master did a detailed expose on thermoclines for Marlin and recognising them in the Cape waters are just as important, especially for us guys on the boats.
 
Feb is by FAR the best time of year in Struis due to the moderate winds and good water temperature and the thermocline get push down by the proceeding summer months resulting in more predictable and slower changes in WATER conditions.
 
This is a basic on the winds in the area....

in Summer generally same apply as to what 7/10 said . Mainly summer species Kobs Krakers Leervis grunts ext .


In Winter , its a bit of a different story , we get the big Steenbrasse on Westerlies . in the bay a NW tend to give better results in winter for Steenbrass , don't worry it can Pump , thats when you get the real monsters .


Towards Suiderstrand , Brandfontein Die Damm and Delkelders you will need to fish on a SW in the winter , and you will also have to find a place thats not full of loose kelp . we often mission al the way to De kelders to find a place .

Ok looking at Windguru it looks like I will go to struis Tuesday. Monday wind is still up a bit. Do you get bloodworm at struis? Last time I was there a couple of guys showed me how to find moonshine worm and I saw a fair number of prawn holes. If there are how would you go about identifying bloodworm holes and how do you collect them. And then obviously what is the bag limit. I cant remember and I really don't want to be doing anything illegal. The number 2 rings a bell. Sorry for all the questions...

There are bloodworm. Best collecting over spring low. So tides look good for you. Use a wire and take a pumo with. 5 bloodworm per person.

Hope you are famliar with collecting bloodworm with a wire. If not...

Look for tiny holes...difficult to find at first but once you recognise it becomes easy. Make a small hook in the wire and insert into hole...you shouldnt feel any resistance. Thread the wire down the hole until you hook the worm. Keep wire taught and pumping around the wire until you feel the worm coming. Takes a little bit of technique but easy to master.

If you have no idea what the holes look like ask a local who is also pumping...
