My point is that each location has its own unique argument. To try a blanket ban approach is doomed to failure as the policy is already leaning to giving MORE rights to coastal communities.

BTW, I had an interesting chat the other day with a forum that wants an MPA to be implemented in the former Transkei - and for the resource to be exclusively used by the local community. No other fishing allowed. I am not sure what the rock and surf clubs are doing about this, but it is also something that requires urgent attention.

This is going to happen more and more, it is also part of the new coastal management plans... and i think it is spoken about in the document i posted, that they have already used it in certain areas.  The local community will decide who gets access to the resource, meaning for example if the local community can prove they need exclusive rights to the fish for example at melkbos slip for survival, they could apply for exclusive rights to the fish there.  It is a tool any of the current treknetters can have if it get's too hot in the kitchen.  I think the Paternoster communities are going or are in the process of applying due to how kreef permits were issued.

Just after Breco imported 50 tons of yellowtail from japan i think, the price in struis dropped to R7/kg off the boat.

Why did they import if our YT stocks are so good? (What on earth are they selling YT for in Japan, I would have thought it would have been better to support a local fisheries and keep the $ in SA?)
Hi Robin
Please let me come to your assistance and remove some of the confusion.
Yellowtail aquaculture is practised in many countries.
Small yellowtail are captured as fry and then raised in pens at sea.
When the small fish have grown to a certain size then there numbers are reduced and only a percentage of the original fish are kept in the next set of pens.
We import the fish that are removed during this thinning out process.
You will notice that imported yellowtail are fairly uniform in size and are a lot smaller that the yellowtail that we are used to.
They are around a foot long or so and might even be a slightly different species. It is possible that you might see some Seriola quinquidens (sp.??).
Yellowtail is a traditional winter in Japan. If you peel off the skin off the raw fish, the white fat underneath sort of resembles snow or frost covered ground.

The same for durban.... the fishing right allocated to that despicable character will not disappear, it will simply be given to the next previously disadvantaged guy standing in line that can prove he's going to give sustainable work to 20 guys. - Marthin

Rumours (note I said rumours) are that this Durban guy is putting the new Lic in his daughter's name.

As for the addition of more Seine Netters in the Cape and anywhere else, we will deal with it when and if it comes. It will be interesting to see if they do allocate more licenses what will happen if these guys tread on existing seine netter's turf. It's really should not be seen as 'oh no, it's doom and gloom'. The tide (excuse the pun) has a strange way of turning on it's own. Just another challenge. (Things generally get worse before they get better) More Seine netters, more chance to expose illegal activities  :tkx:

Correct robin that is the upside... the reall issue tho is they will keep on coming because the fishing right will not disappear, the owner will just change, that is IF we/you/us get DAFF to act.

SO best case scenario is the ownership of the rights will change, because you won't be able to make the right disappear....

I have never believed that anything is unattainable. I need more ammo and I think that more netters will speed that process up...as odd as that sounds. Given the history in Cape Town, would not surprise me if turf wars break out. Once these guys commit to this, they will fight for their living and it will get ugly. I'll have to sit back, take notes and

Hi Travelmember.
Cary Steele - Boe of Recreational Fishing Services (RFS) will be probably be  making submissions in respect of west coast crays for the recreational fishing sector.
RFS is quite anti treknetting and has a good handle on some of the issues.
Try track Cary down.

I attended the DAFF consultation in Durban earlier this week.
There are many issues at stake and that have to be taken into consideration, I felt that the process was fairly transparent.
1. They are looking at creating employment
2. They are looking at creating a food resource
3. Conservation and fish stoocks have been taken into consideration (Even if many do not agree)
4. They are trying the utmost to keep paper license holders out of the equation, so that those on the ground benefit
5. They want licenses to be issued to companies and not individuals so that funds can be made available
6. They are trying to create investment into the sector

There are many considerations to be taken into acount when one looks at the big picture and I think that DAFF has a massive scale task at hand in what they are trying to achieve.

I suggest that if you have something to say, then say it, but make sure you can substatiate your statements with facts and not heresay or you will take the weight out of your argument, they have opened the floor for public comment and now is the time to do it, but whatever you do do it in a mature and proper way.

If you feel that there are current license holders that have abused their conditions then now is the time to act against them so thet they do not get a renewal, and again substantiate all your statements with facts and not heresay.

My opinion is that God put the resource on earth for mans benefit and he put man in control of it, it up to us as man to ensure it is managed in a proper and sustianable way

Can someone please explain how this happened. This is an email I just got from Ken Morty. I do not understand.....if we have until the end of April to lodge objections, what is this (Or am I missing something):

Please be advised that Durban Seine Netters ( Pty ) Ltd  have had their permit renewed for the period 1st April 2013 - 31 March 2014. Regards, Ken Morty. Ken MortyBiodiversity Conservation Co-ordinator (Coast West)  Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Private Bag X3 Congella4013

@ Robin,
If I remember correctly from the meeting last week, the actual permit has already expired. The license I think used to be valid for 8 years but that was recently amended and its term is now only 5 years. This particular license expired a year ago and the netters have been operating under 1 year extensions meaning that they have been reapplying for an extension each year until the new permit is issued through the current process. Even so though, the timing strikes me as very, very strange. Mr Morty took almost 2 months to meet with us to discuss this issue and in this time the new 1 year extension was passed.
