Last time photos were taken of undersize fish being loaded into a bakkie on the beach it was actually the DAFF official's vehicle!!!!!!!

Marthin, that 'old' white rusted Bakkie was a DAFF vehicle? The one that Val kept pulling the tarp over to hide the small fish about 2 months ago? Or, are you talking about that new non rusted bakkie? The newer bakkie was in the photo's from a few weeks ago, but I also thought it was clear that it was a DAFF vehicle. Did someone say it was a trek bakkie?

The ruling here is that any fish caught as "by-catch" regardless a prohibited species, or under size has to be returned to the water, even dead. The Netter is then required, as stipulated in terms of their permit to record EVERYTHING caught in their net, even those dead fish returned to the water.
The issue here, we say, is that they willfully target these fish with the knowledge that the bulk of the haul will be undersized, they don't declare the catch and quantity, and remove the fish for market.
So now the Board is saying "well, give us proof that they are in breach of the permit" since their register shows no such events are taking place and the Netter states that the undersized fish are all returned to the water ???????
Guys, work with us here, any catch you witness, take photos and post to Ken in KZN with PICS, dates, times etc and they will compare it against the netter register. Do the same in the Cape, regardless how small or whatever is in their nets.
I tried a year back to do this through the media supplying photos and facts, the photos were not published, the letter, although published was heavly editored, and a week later i was branded a "racist" by a metro counciller through the same letters column in the same paper.
idiots!!!!! with that mentallity sa is going nowhere!!! well done for standing up to them!!! some major newspapers are also very piky when it comes to issues like this....maybe its the race issue!! well im going to make an effort to get to vechies as often as i can and take  as many pics as i can......hope i get some evidence....suppose ill be called a racist aswell.....

Guy's we must never forget that there are some vey big inequalties and poverty in this country, let alone it being Africa. Of course we must practise sustainable fishing but in my heart I believe we cannot deny the poor a modest living and small survival from the sea. So I can unfortunately not vouch for the netters in the Cape, but the individual in Durban has turned his subsistence netting into a big business and seems to be hauling just about every fish seeking sanctuary around Vetche's "aquarium" out the sea.

I believe he has gone far enough, is long ago no longer a subsistence fisherman, and should be stopped.

I admire the work that the Sea Shepherds and every other conservation body is doing. Just be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water.

Parasite here they have to hand it over to the closest official.  Far as i know that is the harbour master at Kalkbay.

If he doesnt rock up, you can't put it back coz here the trekkers have a bigger time keeping the public from trying to grab the undersize fish or fish that are tried to returned than they have stopping their own crew from stealing catches.

So let's say the designated chap didnt pitch up, and he cannot dump it on the beach.... then what.  Load it on your bakkie and it decided right there you've taken it to smuggle it to Gauteng.

Last time photos were taken of undersize fish being loaded into a bakkie on the beach it was actually the DAFF official's vehicle!!!!!!!

But i will be watching that court case for the outcome as well.

True story, Birtles and myself have seen this more than once

2bar, have you seen them trying to deliver the fish to Kalk Bay and no-one there to take it or are you referring to the public taking the fish? I have not seen this 'harbour master was not there' but here's a pic of a 'thief' helping himself to what is not his. Straight from a Melkbos Trek net. And no-one said a thing.

Public and crew taking fish out of the net on the beach they trek on .

Edit : We've seen the permit holders at Muiz go befok sometimes at
the public and crew trying to steal and take half dead fish thats returned
to the water , so we do see them attempt to keep the public and crew in
check.

Yeah, it's 'organised chaos'. Also, this notion that the trekkers release Bronze sharks because they are 'conservation minded', is non-sense. If they fin a shark on the beach, what do they do with the rest of the shark? Just know that the trekkers will ALWAYS do what is in their own interests.

I also do not buy the whole 'Naartjie won't trek if their are too many small fish'. My belief is that they don't want to have to sort all the smaller fish out from the bigger fish. When you get caught with over 1000 undersized fish in your freezer, no matter how doff the next guy is, he will never believe that you are conservation minded.

The haul was dismal to say the least with mainly  Maasbanker and Scads making up the net. There were perhaps 10 small shad in  total, a few silkies (silkies) and some baby rays. The “bye catch”  (everything except the silkies, scads and mozzies) were returned to the water  in mostly good condition and immediately as the net was brought in. It was a  small net so I guess it was easier to return fish to the water in this instance  however they were returned none the less.
There was however  a Parks Board presence. The Shad were all returned to the water. There were 3 bay  squid and that was about the sum total.

Dear UA Moderators/Admin

Please do not allow JB2 to steamroll conservation related threads like he was given carte blanche on Sea line  Once he is allowed to do that there will NEVER be a normal discussion again.

For some reason he has run the roost on Sealine for many years. Most of the UA moderators know me and my past. Please with respect do not let him take over here as well and chase people away from this forum.

This forum is NOT interested in a childish slanging match about who lied and who didn't. Mr Bruk, if you have issues with RobinF, take them up with him privately.
You have many interesting observations on this subject, which make interesting reading, however we will not tolerate any more bickering at individuals.
We are also NOT interested what has transpired on any other Angling forum. Your kind co-operation will be appreciated.

Thread cleaned.
