Hi Fritz

Maybe a bit of semantics but WE will never be his people...Here is a reply to this on KZN Fishing I did a week ago

Jace, I am not tring to ofend anybody. Not my intention. My old club will confess to that. My issue is that the netters are doing this.
What I wanted to say is what is Morgan going to say when you "Jace" confronts him about the matter. Surely he is not going to throw the same card.

I just want to make a statement to the netters here in Durban and Capetown

I have heard and listened to so many stories but the thing that SICKENS me to the gut when the guys that ABUSE this netting license continue to bring race into the issue.

Guys , please grow up..you cannot use the excuse to destroy our marine resources under the misinformed gesture that we non whites support your greed. WE DO NOT.

Two new facebook pages went up, one on  the West Cape guys and the KZN guys. The pages are there to create awareness  and to start consolidating a support base for the eradication of this type of  fishing for good. If you have a FB profile, any and all ‘likes’  will help to promote these pages and we should all pass on this info. The  bigger the support base, the stronger the resistance to this form of fishing  will become.

An interesting fact to note is the words  ‘South Africa’ on the vetch’s site. If that is anything to go by, the promotion  of support is going to extend beyond our borders. Any info about any of the  activities regarding this netter at vetch’s should be posted to this site ASAP.  It will serve as a diary of events for the upcoming saga as we move forward. If  he even puts that rubber duck in the water to check it’s floatation, post it.
There’s more than one way to fight a  war. Supporting these sites is very important.

Cool facebook pages. I see there is one for Cape Town too. I 'liked' them both.

Let's be honest, it's about bloody time! :FST:

An organization has been formed to try to have  this Durban Seine Netting stopped. A meeting was held last night with Ezemvelo  officers where serious concern was raised regarding the activities of these  netters on the Durban Beach Front.
Members at the meeting  explained to Ken and Benedict Nene their views and intentions on netting. Ken  is of the opinion that the netters are acting in line with their licence  conditions. The recent “Garrick catching” issue was tabled and questions asked  why the fish had landed in their freezers instead of being released. His only  explanation offered that all 9 fish were dead when beached.  The members refuted his response, but he  could not offer any other explanation.
It later emerged that neither he nor Benedict were  present at that haul, but just took the word of their officers who were there.
It is quite coincidental that on that day, 2  members of the public reported a catch of 117 Garrick. Members sentiments were  that a big haul of Garrick was definitely made and the officers just took  9 and left the netters with the rest. Sentiments are that Ezemvelo seem  reluctant to take any action against the netters in fear of something.

The  public are requested that should they witness a beached “haul” they photograph  the catch made by the netters and post them, no matter how insignificant they  may seem.
Even  if they net a few fish, they need to declare that catch,  and if it is found out that that catch has not  been declared, a charge will be laid that could   lead to them having their licence revoked.
Public/fishermen  alike are all asked to assist in stopping this most destructive and  indiscriminate form of fishing.

Good for you CLS, I thought you'd be one of the first to say "I'm in". It has the potential to be one of the most productive meetings yet. Ken just needs to do his part....will he do it? I'm waiting to see. (I honestly hope so, the situation is actually worse than first thought)

There will definitively representative from KZN Fishing at this meeting .So we will be keeping an eye on this thread

It is actually amazing how these meetings take place under the cover of darkness. It certainly looks like certain role players are being protected and it would be nice to know why. With a fairly large base in KZN one would have assumed that KZNF would have been invited.

Maybe they know we are presently in High Court with one quasi govt department.

hi all
what i would like to know is, why should the public be responsible to notify authorities of illegal catches?
should they not be present to regulate and oversee what these idiots haul out? every sector controlled by government is a joke take everything from u but gives nothing back.
Because its our duty as responsible citizens, and in our own best interests. Evil prevails because good men do nothing.

Thank you Rooiwil, you cannot believe the K*K that I have gotten for my efforts and even for my avatar! Bunch of kids on another forum thought they'd try to get under my skin by shooting shots at Sea Shepherd  :win: . I must say that I seldom get flack on this forum, that is what puts UA well above other forums. It's interesting that those that those that are so bold on other forums (And that are members here) won't pull the same non-sense here. Thank you Ultimate Angling for a superb forum. UA is a friendly and a 'warm' place to chat on. There is a mutual respect on this forum which one does not see on a lot of other forums.

Anyway, the tide has shifted and this form of fishing is no longer acceptable. This form of fishing started out as 'subsistence' many years ago, now it is a lucrative money making racket. It needs to be stopped completely.

I guarantee you all, that in 15yrs time, we will all look at this form of fishing and think holy hell, did they really still do that in 2013? The saddest thing is that these operations may shut down from lack of fish before we get them stopped. Maybe I'm wrong, possibly the resources will survive, I really hope so.

Robin the difference is this thread has been about durban.  I agree with all your sentiments about the durban trek, and will even go so far as support it if there is anything i can do.

This thread is and always has been about Seine Netting. The sentiments remain the same whether in KZN, Western Cape or even if some clown tried seine netting in the Vaal Dam.

If I posed the question: Those opposed to the Vetch's Seine Netting operation, would you support the efforts to shut down the Western Cape Seine Netting operations? I am 100% sure that most would support the Western Cape efforts. It's not about the person running the operation at Vetch's, it's about the mechanics of this type of fishing and what it is doing to our resources.

KZN... Mechanized boats and efforts.

Western cape, 1 area per trek, paddle boats (last year 2 crew died when it overturned).  The nets are often empty in the western cape, and unlike other commercial or recreational efforts, nartjie cannot go to Koeberg coz the steenbras are running or move to struis when the yellowtail are so thick you can walk on them.

He has to fish that specific area and hope the fish are there.  My sentiments about sea shepherd and also the western cape treks remain exactly the same....  The impact is minimal, and because it's the only form of commercial fishing 99% of the public see, the picture is skewed.

The undersize kob, even if you take all the undersize kob killed in a year, would not weigh up to 1 commercial inshore trawler's damage.  Western Cape trekking is silwer kob.  The kob all commercial inshore trawlers are targeting.

So it has MINIMAL impact on the resources.  TAC is worked out with possible undersize death taken into account.  Last year when false bay was full up with undersize kob, 2 of the trekking operations, nartjie being one, decided OUT OF THEIR OWN, to not trek until the local scientists said the undersize fish have moved out of the bay.

The local hook and cook recreationals didnt show the bossiekob the same courtesy....

All i've wanted from you from the start robin is not to have blinkers on, look at the whole picture, don't paint the entire picture black, you take away from your own credibility.  There is good work to be done here, as long as you don't undermine yourself.

It is unfortunately a problem i've seen with sea shepherd on a number of occasions... i was also in awe of captain watson was doing.... until i delved deeper, spoke to people really involved in conservation and so on and so forth.

My opinion (not an attack on you or sea shepherd) about conservation is that it will never ever work if we want to convince someone to stop something that is feeding his children and sending them to school.  If you give that person an alternative method, that will not be more difficult, to still feed his children and send them to school, an oppertunity to earn the same salary without ever having seen std 8, then it will succeed.

We can not sit in our house with our dstv watching AFSN eating our steak, after working at our job that no doubt impacts heavily on nature(some more than others), while our children sit in private schools and drive their own motorcars at 18, and then want to tell someone else that has made a living the same way the last 30 years

"Oi you can't do that coz i told you so even if you have a licenced permit to be doing it, AND when you stop doing that it's not my problem how you feed your family and send your kids to school!"

Please allow me to correct you - The Vetch's (KZN) netter use a paddle boat too. NOT Mechanised.

The netter (Naartjie) that you are putting on a mantle here, was recently caught with over 1000 undersized Cob in his freezer (If I am not mistaken) And we have all seen the photo's of the Arendse treks. One does not need blinkers with this 'in your face' evidence.

As for my credibility, someone is always falsely accusing me, misquoting me, etc. etc. etc. Let me put it this way, I am against Seine Netting and will remain so.

This form of marine destruction is NOT subsistence. Your argument might be a noble one, but I could say the same about a shoplifter or housebreaker who breaks the law to feed his family. Just because one is supporting their family, it does not make that form of income eternally acceptable.

I changed my avatar for you, this year Sea Shepherd saved 932 whales. Those that try to shoot Sea Shepherd down, where were they in Dec, Jan, Feb while Sea Shepherd were in the freezing Southern ocean being hit by stun grenades and water cannons? Eating steaks and watching DSTV no doubt.
