Before I post pictures of the squid that did the damage on the tuna last week..note it was last week!! And oh yes the 650 lb blue we released was also on a squid!! :nobs: :nobs: :nobs:

First there are a few stats on the last few days that I needn't share but for the record they may interest some! :uarocks
There was some debate on moon phase over the past few posts and as I don't want to take responsibility for taking my brother on a four day blank out session, I will be bringing up that topic again, as well as any other excuse I can find.

My brother Paul arrived on Friday 13th, exactly the day we had the 2 Blues and two Yellows and I thought the game was on....mmm. The results of my brothers trip were dismal, so what changed? :shk

Well the moon shrunk and we had 2 fronts with a low barro as well as difficult sea conditions. The water temp increased and the break on the 1000m line disappeared,as did the baitfish. :vio
The Kouta dried up ..we were there with live Jubbies and we also swam a live Yellowfin for 4 hours for a black..we tried everything and maybe too many things!  :nobs:
Ok, I get it I friggen failed!! sry
But thats the point here! This season we have had a 100% success rate in delivering a marlin or desired result for every charter group we have had. How then does this happen?
Well if you've fished long enough I sure don't need to remind you as many of you have experienced the same, but this swr sure came at a bad time!!
Its just a true story to put fishing into perspective for those who go on a fishing trip expecting yesterdays results..I expected them too, but this is fishing, and as my brother likes to quote ..if it was bar coded and on a shelf, it would be called shopping!!... tight lines all!!

Maybe a reataurant opened at the "Kitchen" or they all had a season end function at "The Berge" it could have been an adult show at "The Drukgang" and they maybe invited "Small Heigh" and "Heigh Points" to the function or a masked ball at "Kasteel". Maybe just a juvenile party at "Jolly Robino". Whatever it is, it has us all going grey and bald at the same time.

So much for the Nationals, only seven teams participating and no need for me to go down to skipper after all! Sign of the times and the economy...on top of that it sounds like the fish have taken a break everywhere with poor catches of tuna in the Eastern Cape and nothing down in Cape Town..strange season? Maybe the tuna are late, will have to wait and see!

Still a fair number of Blacks around and there are the normal YF up to 40kg.

Been using squid lures behind birds far back..absolute killers!

Thanks much appreciated.

Always wonder why the big Tuna do not take on conas or is just because people do not fish for the big YFT with conas?
YFT love Kona's, just set the spread slightly different to Bills, and generally smaller Kona's 8-9 inch work better, if you find a school do a slide, works like magic

Thanx Shag been catching game and hunting a bit , not too fussed about fishing waiting for it to turn on somewhere.
Squids out perform Konas on yellowfin most times but yes smaller konas and Jets out back are also effective. Weighting in the squid is important to get the right action so try different barrel weights and check the preformance..heavy seas bigger weight! Tight lines

With the fishing real slow all round its given us a break to reflect on the past season at Richards Bay. To say that we had good season would be putting it mildly!! At the start of the season we were hoping to do 20 charters in the first season and to catch some good fish. Even with almost a month wiped out due to cyclones and bad weather we reached these targets and caught some very special fish
in the process. We also scored a marlin with every marlin charter group we had! 26 Billfish with 22 releases,2 DOA and 2 weighed, including the biggest Blue weighed at RBay and a new Junior Yellowfin record 0f 82 kg.
We had a good go at the 15kg record between charters and had some good fish on but they didnt stay attached for long. Next season for sure. Our strike to landing ratio was around 50% on the heavy tackle and we had 5 fish over 500 lb, the biggest 800lb.
For the first time Richards Bay has a professional charter operation and a fully rigged marlin boat with all the latest equipment and the results have shown this. What a pity we don't have serious clients who would like to fish for big fish and have the patience to wait for the big one. April to June is the time for the big girls but unfortunately everyone here is back at work and there are not enough clients to warrant us staying on longer. The average size of the fish in these later months is over 200kg's in comparison to the plentiful 80-120 kg fish in Dec. There are granders out there but they only come around in the late season and unfortunately no one is out there fishing for them!

One thing is for sure, and that is that there is no reason to go spending a fortune to travel around the world to catch a dream billfish, they are right here in our back yard.!

Looking forward to the next season and will be starting up earlier this year around end Oct. Tight lines..

Liberty went tight on a good fish today, they called it at 600lb.  Unfortunately they parted company after 10 minutes. getting temp of 24.6 nice to see the blues are still in R/bay. Dolfie released a Black of 600lbs yesterday from soddies.
