There are many different ways to make Wind-on leaders... my preferred way is to do the Double Splice, but many say it's overkill, and it's also much more difficult to do than this simple version.

So here is my version of making your own Single Splice Wind-on leaders...

Cool guys, just remember to stick to the Size chart... don't use Dacron that is too big for the mono...

Other things you will need, taken from the original Double splice thread...

Doesn't have to be #7, #5 works just as well.

I must admit I've never liked a double splice and have never trusted a single splice, so I've always tied my wind-ons up as a "one and a half" splice! Only difference on mine, is I whip finish twice, on the short length and on the long length if that makes any sense?

Nice post, I still think it is a lot of effort to go through! Make a knot, quicker and IMO more secure!

yes but its much cheaper than taperd leaders and a well made one wil never ever fail think about the marlin guys with a pissed off 500kg marlin on one side and a tiagra 130 fulled with 130lb line and a boat with 2x 250hp on the back to sett a 14/0 hook? they dont fail if they are made well.

the guy i buy mine from has landed 20 odd black pylies with 7 over 200kgs! lots of those big eyed russian jumping sharks and duckbulls,threshers,raggies,bronzies op to 200kgs most of them off rocks and i still havent heard of any of his failing if that doesnt say enough then i dont know??

Craig how are you going to make a knot in 1.6mm leader? That's what we use Wind-ons for. Up to 1mm - sure knot is the way to go, but from 1.2mm upwards... that knot gets very big and bulky...?

Wind on won't take any longer. You make a bimini I make a bimini, you make a figure of 8 and I make a cats paw. What's the difference in time?

Wind-on are pre-made, so you just have to either do a bimini or "stich" the braid, pretty fast I would say.

Check out what guys chasing MONSTER Blufin Tuna are using and also properly made windon break tests versus the best of knots and you will see what we mean.

But yes if my PRE-MADE windons would end I would just tie a knot

I knot 1,5m Perlon leader all the time, granted it is for my reef fishing and I don't have to throw very far so its not always the neatest! It still holds a 20+kg Spotty on a locked drag, no problem! And that is with a spiderhitch not a bimini for the doubled line!

It is a bit unfair for me to compare windons for the beach either as my heaviest beach leader is 1mm, don't need anything bigger than that.
