FYI

T Line tapered leaders are the nuts!!! I love those things for the bricks!!! Nice small knot and 1,6mm is very fishable!

T-line sponsored my team a few for Nationals! Big ups to them for supporting the little guys as well as the seniors!

Must agree... Mike from T-line is a first class bloke!! Always, always helping out! Yup, tapered leaders are my go to leader setup now... use wind-ons when I run out of tapered leaders.

Next time I see you on the beach I'll race you, we see who is back in the water faster after a burn-off. You prep a wind-on and I make a knot!  :happ:

haha ya knots are far quicker i will sometimes start the day off with a wind on off the beach but if i break off or get burned off i normally tie a 1mm or 1.2mm unless its monsters around i lost a bronzie at tweede baai on a 1.2mm leader it jumped and went mad then after 1h30 got it in the shore break and my 1.2mm leader was destroyed and snapped before we could loand it easy 130kgs + a monster!!! so on went the 1.6mm wind on and the only other pull i had was a smoothie haha

also love them i got my bronzie of 100.8kgs on a 1.5mm one and it rolled the trace opening my 10/0 kendal brown and almost breaking my swivel and dup slide but the leader was perfect infact it has caught 1 raggie of 180kgs,a bronzie of 100.8kgs and 3 smaller ones and still fine untill a oylie stole it on the mountain

Reefz why do you prefer the double splice to the single?

It can only be stronger. Whether it is entirely necessary or not, or worth the trouble making it, is a subject for debate.

I think that's another shimano/daiwa debate! Both have merits but in the end its personal choice

Was going through this post and made some observations on the slight differences when i make a single splice wind on  :i start the same with a small loop for the connection to the mainline + the 5-8 Tanaka splice , then the shorter tag end +/- 3 to 5cm i pull thru into the main dacron , then i run about 30 cm of  leader thru some fine sandpaper ,just to roughen the surface up so that the dacron has a surface to "bite " onto , although on the last 50kg shark , i noticed that the leader had pulled slightly out the dacron +/- 2 to 3cm so the only adjustment i would do is maybe run the leader a bit more than 8 cm into the dacron, but besides that the double Tanaka splice with the 10 cm in between and the longer tag end in the outer dacron is a grand idea.. :win:

My main difference comes in that I only use 3 tanaka splices tag end inside the main piece and out then 3 splices inside the main dacron with the tag end and then the same as Mike roughen up the leader and slide it in. With the binding I put the whole shebang under tension and then do half hitches to hold it under tension. I have NEVER had any slippage on them my mainline always pops long before anything else. I think the best test I have had is locking up the drag on a tiagra 50 and a very peed off blackfin on the other end my wind on held perfectly

although on the last 50kg shark , i noticed that the leader had pulled slightly out the dacron +/- 2 to 3cm

This is why I prefer the Double Splice!

I just quikly scanned throught this post , so pardon if I mention things that has been mentioned .

I or me and our clan fish with Double splice the dacron is about 50cm long and the mono gets pushed into them about 6 to 15 cm . We have never had an Eye ripped off or one of them pulled .

I went to go see Noweeds , and he then told me he swears by the Single splice , also he pointed out to me that the mono must get pushed right up as far as posible that it sits close to the Stitch .As to the double splice have a piece of double walled Dacron ,and were the Mono eds creates a kink .

Gave it a bit of thought , and it made perfectly sence to me . I however have not had a pull on the Single splice , because I only started making the not too long ago .
Confidence plays a roll , casting action plays a part . ect ect
I thing is for sure , once you have fished with them , you must not be right in the head to turn back to big bulky knots , and with the price of end tackle , its  worth it . each to its own .
T line Tapered leaders are very good too .

Reefz awesome post  :+ cred: and only saw this now.....was making some wind-ons(using this post) for the up coming comp. Just three question
  • can I put super glue where the dental floss attaches the Dacron and the leader ?
  • can I also then put a small piece of heat shrink over that join
  • and what is the average length of your leader (florocarbon) once done

Mike, yes you can put Superglue over the join. Just makes the join slightly stiffer due to the hard superglue.
No problem with the heatshrink either.
For Rock and Surf, we use 9m leaders.
For jigging, I use about 4m.
For Popping, I prefer the Twisted leaders, about 4m long.

Hi Tony
You have me compleatly confused and this is doppie questions.
What is the purpose of the wind on leader?
Do you attache your final trace to the end of the mono of the wind on?
If I spin from the beach( 10ft Airocast with 12lb braid) do I need a wind on and what length/size would you recomend?

No sweat Monster.
In Rock and Surf for instance, we use 9m leaders attched to our mainlines. Up to 1mm leaders, a Bimini with a Double Fig 8 is sufficiently small enough to cast the knot through the eyes of the rod. Over 1mm, and up to 1.6mm, that knot becomes very bulky and catches the guides on the cast. So for leaders over 1mm, we use Wind-ons, because the knot used to join a windon to the mainline (modified catspaw) is tiny, and very easy to cast. Also, Windon's being Dacron spliced are significantly stronger than ordinary straight leaders.
Your trace is attached to the end of the Wind-on leader, yes. In our case, it will be to a Stopper ring when we are sliding.

Light tackle Spinning from the beach a Windon is not necessary. But for medium to heavier spinning, I have moved on to using Braid leaders...

If Mainline braid is 30lb, I make up beforehand a few 50lb Braid Casting   leaders. These leaders are Braid stitched at one end to form a loop and   are about 4m long.
Then we do a Bimini in the Mainline, then join to the BrAid   leader with a CatsPaw. The end of the Braid leader is joined to 1m of   Fluoro with the 7 turn Uni - Fig 8. This stonger Braid leader wraps onto   the reel a few turns, which allows a much greater force through the   cast without snapoffs.

If you're using 50lb braid mainline, then use 80-100lb Braid leaders.

A   lot of the KZN guys are now using these Braid leaders for spinning - it   helps tremendously. Since using this method, I haven't lost a lure in   the cast in 3 fishing trips - that's thousands of casts...!

Maybe this helps?
