Hi Garrick,

from experience in Port Edward in July, most guys there employ the livebait sliding technique. A good trip I learnt last year is to make sure you use Fluoro Carbon for your livebait trace ... it DOES work.

If youu're there, look for some of the locals such as Oom Cas (a local legend with a BIG mouth but an even BIGGER heart) Jaco, Shane (Oom Cas' sidekick), etc..... They're a bunch of nice guys that are always willing to help if you're willing to fit into how the rules on Splash rock works. The most important thing is not to cast out a sinker only to book a spot in one of the pension pipes if you haven't yet got your live shad.

But tother than that, good luck, hope you have LOTS of  :tite  and get PLENTY  :shd: ,  :grk:  or the occasional  :cout: .

Howzit Garrick, not sure about the places in front of the Carribean Beach Estate itself but if you travel into Port Edward itself the most popular spot in Shad and Garrick season is most definitely Splash Rock. It's got a lot of deep water directly in front of it which makes it the most productive for livebait angling. If the  :shd:  are on the bait you are almost always guaranteed that someone is going the get a pull from a  :grk: . Further down from Splash Rock there's also Lucky Dip that also produces a lot of  :shd:  but is generally not known for larger eds. If you're standing behind Splash Rock to the left you'll find Suicide Rock. This spot can also be productive in  :grk:  and  :gt:  season but be VERY carefull here. This is a very flat and slippery piece of rock that can be VERY dangerous to fish on. To the right of Splash Rock is Black Rock which is also known to produce some good  :grk:  but getting your  :shd:  livies there can be a challenge. Further down the coast line towards the Wild coast you also get Grannies Pool, Dassie and a couple of others but here it's mostly scratching for Bronze Bream and the ever elusive Blacktail.

Then towards the other side you can also fish in front of the Casino at the Wild Coast Sun but be sure to do this in numbers as it is a remote stretch of beach and there can be some elements that can cause trouble.

For Vidal, luckily I know the area fairly well but ANY tips and assistance will still be GREATLY appreciated ...  :rck"

Enjoy it and I hope you get your arms stetched !!! ...  :tite

:shre:  Jakes.Much appreciated man.Yeah I hope to get some reel runs and really looking forward to this maiden trip down there.
From past experience, fishing near or around river mouths always gave you some decent eds or ineds pulls. So I am hoping this will be the case here.Looking forward to meeting you at Vidal Jakes.

If anybody else knows what the fishing is like in front of Carribean Estate ,please do share your experience.

Cheers

Try fishing at the Lighthouse for your garrick. Should be less crowded than Splash or Lucky dip.

fishing around the Carribean estate usually results in shad and your odd grunter and stumpie, grunters and perch in the river.

If i may add

"use the top hook" and hook it somewhere in the fish.

because, if the trace is not right etc and the shad big, you do not want the trace to close on you "pulling together" screwing your shad like a "u" bolt.

still a lekker trace to use.
and use it for garrick, not big kingies or bigggg dagas.

Howzit Angler21.Thanks for the tip mate.I really appreciate it.But the problem is,where is the lighthouse.I have no clue on the area as it is my first trip down there.Grunter, stumpie and perch should and hopefully will provide some fun for the wife and my boys.

@ Pottie - how u doing bud?long time no hear.Fomr the throw trace,non-return clip and the garrick slide, which is more user friendly?

The Lighthouse is on Milford road, just south off Splash Rocks. As you enter the little shopping centre, look out for the right turn just after the Post Office - there are signs for Aloe B&B - turn and keep on until you see the lighthouse on your left, drive down to dead end and you're there. Parking is relatively safe as there are regular patrols. as with most spots these days, just be alert and dont stay on too late unless you're with company and you're packing  w;k

Garrick

user friendly = sliding
fish friendly = sliding

but then again, if you get someone like charles stewart from pta.
12 purglass castmaster rod.
lobs the shad over the first breaker.

my rods are in deep over the ledge on a slide

who gets the fish, the uncle with the lobbed shad.

casting shad you need strong rods etc.
you should know how to cast that multiplier with that shad, otherswise it's crow nests.

but then again, you could always cast just here and slide just here.

but nee wat, we need to go the ekstra mile, hey?

it's up to you, to decide what when, where and how with what ?

Don't be afraid to throw that shad! Last year july I saw a couple of garrick come out and all of them were on throw baits. Sometimes especially off deepwater points the garrick are just off the front which is logical. The shad are feeding close in garrick feed on shad so why would he sit 120m out to sea when his dinner is closer. The garrick also use the shallower water and especially white water to herd the bait fish so if you see an area of white water forming just off the point put a bait just past it. Good luck with those garrick! If you want to fish a different spot try ladder rock in glenmore it is very quiet you will more than likely be the only guy there but that water is deeeeeep!

100% Must-Byte, throwing a live shad will most defintely work except when everyone else around you is sliding you're bound to cheese some people off with your drifting line. From experience at Splash Rock, it's best to follow suit with what the locals and other visitors are doing otherwise it can become a long-ass day with people bitching & moaning. But you are 100% right, 9 out 10 times the Garrick takes the livebait within the 1st 10m-30m out.

Ladder Rock will also work and is also a very nice deep water point but please just be carefull. MANY people have been knocked down by big waves there and have broken arms, legs, etc. It can be a very dangerous place. But then again, so is Splash Rock especially on a pushing tide just before and after high tide.

I've never fished the lighthouse for Garrick but I'm sure you will get them there as well. If the shad is there you will always have a chance of getting them.

The river between Carribean Beach Estate and Thw Wild Coast Sun is called the Umtamvuna river and yes you will get Mullet in it. But if it's Garrick you want to target only worry about mullet when the shad's scarce. Generally speaking you can fill your quota of 4 livies within minutes at Splash Rock so I wouldn't bother with mullets if I were you.

this brings back memories.
two years back, we were sliding shad at st lucia.
there was a strong surge from south to north.
i made a cast and slid a shad. i drifted onto one of the locals lines.
seeing it, the local was upset. i did reel in my shad, the local still upset and called me a dikvel...............................

i wanted to klap him as we dont get along.

took my shad, went left of him and another local.
made a simple cast and slid the shad.
4 minutes later, vas garrick of about 6.5kg.

walked past the local and showed him how a dikvel catches garrick.........................

toe was sy bek eers dik.
the other local "oom pottie" commented that the cast was not very deep.
i agreed as it was about a 80 meter cast.

here it shows again;
i had previous pulls, on the same type of area, water working onto a bank.

:tkx:  Jakes. Will keep that in mind. And yes it is the Umtamvana river.
My biggest achilles is fishing off bricks and in thick crowds and that is why I always go to St Lucia where there is no bricks unless you go to First Rocks,Mission and Vidal.I can see meself battling on the bricks at splash.but I guess i need to adjust in order to get reel runs off the bricks.
