John F's DIY: Spreader bar teaser
« on: January 06, 2011, 11:01:42 PM »
During a recent sweep & clean exercise I found 6 tent poles lying there and almost finding their way to the rubbish bin (if the wife got there first!).

This is the perfect material for a spreader bar (hook less) teaser I've been thinking about for a while. I wanted something flexible, tough and not so heavy.

The poles are 48.5 cm long and perfect for 3 strings of squids (3 + 3 + 3).

I'm using old line (50 lb) as leaders and pink kingfisher squids (14 cm).

For simplicity, leaders are attached to the bar using slip knots.

All strings are the same size (about 1m long). Each squid has foam inserted to help with the flotation (spreader bars are supposed to be most effective at the surface). A small bead and a simple figure 8 knot locks it all up.

This bar will be run flat in the corners and a pink lure will be run right next to it.

Let's see what happens!

Here are a few pics of the spreader bar in action with a small DIY soft bird in front.

I had a chance to try the spreader bar the past weekend and I must tell I was impressed. I run it close (3-4 m) or at a certain distance (5-10 m) and the damn thing kept running straight, no entanglements of jams!

Very happy with it! Now all I need to do is sort out different squids and make a few more bars!!!!!

Just finished 2 spreader bars, one with 3 squid lines and one with 5. Thanks John, hope it runs as well as yours. Stupid question... how do you store the sets on the boat without it becoming a hassle to setup and store again without tangling ect? just a bag it or do you have another trick up your sleeve? I want to try these in a social event in feb in R-bay. my little rig cant run as deep as the big boys, so figure any trick to improve our chances helps. Ill be running them off outriggers I made from your other DIY thread  . sucks fishing on a budget....
