It's ridiculous! I might get shot down here, but I don't agree with this kind of therapy at all. All it does is make you forget about your problems and issues, without tackling them head on and dealing with the problems that made you depressed in the first place. 6 months after being on anti-depressants, your problems will still all be there because all you've done is swept them under the carpet!!
It's a similar position to the whole cholesterol medication debacle, where the marketing of Prozac/anti-depressants etc is funded by a multi-billion dollar industry, bogus research all funded by them! The Pharmaceutical Industry has a lot to answer for.

I normally apply a few measures of Single Malt whiskey to the affected area.

GP therapy - take a pill and pay as you walk out the door  :cnfzd .  My GP has been trying to put me on anti anxiety/depressant pills for over a year now and I refuse.  I was also taking an anti-inflammatory every night for arthritis in hands - I used to drop just about everything I picked up at least once.  3 weeks into Banting lifestyle and I cannot believe the difference:

No anxiety (no more Urbanol)
No jumpy leg syndrome at night
No hiatus hernia pain
No joint pain (after a whole day of making traces)
No heartburn
Sustained energy throughout the day
A "vet tekkie" old fashioned bicycle size tyre around my middle (from a tractor size)
Dropped to size 34 jeans (whoop whoop first time since I had kids)
A zest for living which I forgot I had - I wake and and feel like dancing  :yipee: and the food is really great - I don's miss carbs/sugar at all, not even my old favourite slap chips.

The wrong forum for this question I reckon, as a general rule to be a fisherman you have to be an optimist (against all odds some times). Optimists seldom suffer depression.
But some people need a helping hand for a bit to calm the waters while they get their ducks in a row. Happy pills don't fix depression, they just give you a chance to sort it out yourself, like using a crutch while your broken leg heals.

Without doubt happy pills have 'their place' and some people are better off with them, BUT (as with Ritalin) they are so easily prescribed to all and sundry that its downright scary - doctors no longer treat the cause......only the symptoms!! :-(

you get people with a defect where there is a severe lack of serotonin.  My dad had that, and it was horrible.  He used pills that got that level sorted.  At the same time he became a Christian, and well no more depression.  He didnt want to live for 45 years and tried more than once, then became a Christian, found out what he was living for and God took him 2 years later.

I'm on Lamitor, for eplilepsy however it's also prescribed for bipolar and or depression.

i take medication and i am a firm believer that they work.
I suffered from a nervous breakdown in 2008 and have been  on and off medication since then.

I feel that they do help me and i have tried to go off them, but my persona changes and i become a very short and angry person.
it helps balance the endorphyn level in my body.

Must agree with Rory, it scary how many people are on them! I personally have never had any, and niether anyone in my immediate family (my wife and children).
Another scary one is the number of people in Ritallin. Students using them to study, business men using them to get better output. I tink it's a schedule 5 drug, it may be 7, but you need a doctor's prescription to get the stuff. Very scary! I battle with my attention span, and have done so for all of my life, but God has been good, and I have found ways to work around most of the issues (lists and spreadsheets). I just can't see myself going on that stuff just so I can focus better.
