Agulhas Banks morning out
« on: March 04, 2014, 01:02:56 PM »
After the Two Oceans Marlin Compi we packed up our heavy tackle and decided to look for some light tackle fun with my sons and some friends.

SA Fish (Hermann), Anton, my Oldest and youngest son (Liam and Keelan) and the mate Tyler went out for the morning on Sunday. I was always going to be a rush as we had to fly to JHB in the afternoon.

We put out early (05h30) and headed for the 12mile, on a report of strong westerly in the afternoon going to NW. We ran out in a large long period swell with light winds which freshened as we got to the 12 mile at sun up, with a nice dolphin encounter on the way. We put out light tackle and started to look for the Yellowtail....NADA... we moved into the deep behind the 12mile and picked up a skippie and nothing else.

We saw some birds beyond the 100mm mark but the wind had picked up drastically. After some debate we headed there to find NO fish!! only Killer whales who came right to the boat. I have been doing this for over 30 years and this is the third time I have seen killer whales (Orcas if you prefer) and never have I have the come so close.

So Tyler who was on his first EVER boat trip out of a harbour caught his first fish, saw his first dolphin and first Orcas.

We moved to the 5miles banks due to the wind and caught it with no wind as the weather swung from the west to NW and got in a hour of wild action (all small stuff but great fun on light tackle)
We caught some baby YFT and Herman caught his fist YFT and a nice skippy on a spinner later in the day when we moved onto the 5 mile banks on the way home. My youngest son caught his first fish on his new Sensation rod with his Tica spin focus (Thanks to a UA friend) and 18lbs line.
A few small Sangoras and Yellow Tail were caught on the 5mile and released as we already had some YFT for the pan..

We all had a good time and rushed home wash our kit and to pack and catch out flight..
Some pics to follow...

Wow now there is something I have never had the pleasure of seeing out at sea, some incredible shots of the Orcas  :tkx:

Proud moment that watching your son catch his first fish. (clap)

Are sangora's part of the Amber Jack or tropical yellow tail?
