Nice one Tony and great quality post! I have seen some of our chaps use this identical trace offshore for their bottom fishing with great success!

Thanks REEFMAN!  :uarocks

I may add that I use small plastic bags filled with sand or pebbles when fishing the brics and distance is not essential. I normally seal different size bags / weights with a heat sealer and keep them in the box. When you get stuck the bag simply tears and voila. Very cheap and no lead left behind to pollute the area. The bag is almost always retrieved reducing the risk of pollution.

Charles..
Plastics way worse than lead !
I'd rather use a cloth of sorts... Something bio degradable... Small pieces of plastic may be mistaken for chokka etc..

:+ cred: excellent from the grand master of knots & traces, maybe it should be a post nominal thing, such as Reefman GMKT, which looks impressive to say the least

The original no swivel trace I have used for years, I tie the loops with a double overhand knot which is a figure 8 knot and leave them as loops. The loop sticks out more or less at 90 deg from the mainline,  and I use a version of the Willyjim circle hook knot, difference being bringing the loop in from the back, it stays fairly tangle free if you use a swivel before the sinker

(clap) Very nice! The only problem is that I will  every time it gets stuck and breaks off.

Excellent trace setup!!! Definately going to use a few adaptations of it on my scratching setup!!

There are a few ways to make getting stuck with this trace less prone to happen.  I've seen a similar kind of trace with some adjustments below fished on strand reefs for a whole session without breaking off once landing i think 4 kob, 3 spotties and a smoothie.

1. Use braid. When you pick up to reel in the setup lifts immediately and doesnt drag over structure.

2. Use circle hooks in stead of J Hooks, again if you lift sharply and reel the circle shouldnt get stuck, as you can't set a circle if you strike....( you will still get stuck but a lot less)

3. I would prefer a swivel on the main snood that can slide up and down between the 2 fig8 knots with beads, and only a 10cm sinker trace of .40 for 2 reasons.

a) If you get a fish on on the bottom hook the sinker is right with it, so when you are lifting the fish over a reef, the sinker is coming over as well.

b) If you get a fish on on the top hook on this rig, with 10cm sliding trace the sinker is about 70cm from the fish.  With the way above it's dangling almost a metre below it.  It will take some luck to get the fish over a reef without the sinker getting stuck, bringing the .40 thinner sinker line into play.

Some good points!
Definitely if you're fishing over reefs/rocks, then rather join thinner line on the bottom for the sinker to break off if needed.

Problem with just a sliding swivel is that it defeats the object of being anti-tangle...
The Swivel tee sits perpendicular to the mainline, then the tubing keeps the hook snoot well away from the mainline; whereas with just a swivel, it will hand at an angle...

Hi Reefz ....

Another brilliant post :udman: ....

I was just wondering if there is any reason you don't use a big three-way swivel and the anti-tangle tube on the hook snood...
...does the fig 8 knots on either side of the swivel not drastically reduce the breaking strain of the trace should you get snagged on a reef....

thanks and well done again ...

True that plastics are worse than lead but the bag tears, dumps the sand and comes out with your line. No harm done. I must stress that I use this method only in the brics and when distance is not required.

Think a 3way swivel will detract from the lowviz look of the trace? Will probably also slip over the knot, unless you use a bead. The less visible components the better. 3 way swivel with beads would definitely do the same thing; the tee swiv is see through and just looks better... confidence?

A Fig 8 in the middle of the line is the same a s a Fig 8 to your hook - it will have the same decrease in strength. An overhand knot, on the other hand, will dramatically reduce the line strength.

It's amazing how you are able to take scratching to a new level Tony...
Professional tutorial as always - thank you for sharing. Now I just have to put away my unused spinning gear and find my unused scratching gear.

the trace with the break off sinker is ideal for rough ground, I have used NGK sinkers before now when it is rocky, it's like confession saying the NGK bit, but I guess I'm not alone in using them
