Reefman's de-luxe Anti-tangle Scratching trace
« on: January 28, 2014, 01:49:27 PM »
Ok so I've primarily been targeting edibles most of my fishing career and have gone through many variations of light tackle scratching traces.
The quickest, cheapest and easiest one to make is the No-swivel trace, which has accounted for plenty fish. http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=200.0

Problem with this trace is that it tangles quite easily and is difficult to adapt.

Have been doing some strategizing with this the last few months and have come up with a "de-luxe" version...  :hnthnt:
Using tee-swivels, space tubing and floats etc to provide a variety of options and increasing your chances.
It's a variation of the Helicopter rig, which features 2 hooks.

This is for targeting small edibles like Wave Garrick and Stumpnose, but can be adapted to suit your target species by changing the size of the hooks, floats etc.
The best thing about the 2 hook scratching trace is that you can use different baits on top and bottom hooks, thereby spreading your chances.

You will need:

Some ordinary Bait foam.

Size 8 or 10 Power swivels

Daiichi DH55 #6 hook for the top hook and #8 for the bottom.

Some space tubing as used by Carp anglers. An even better idea would be to use the Korda anti-tangle tube as used in some of the Freshwater rigs.

Some supple Fluorocarbon. 0.50-0.55mm

Some swivel tees

The Breakaway Swivel tee, which has an oval ring to the swivel. The one's we get in SA are better in that they have a circular swivel eye.

PROCEDURE

We're going to make the 2 Hook snoots first. Then Attach them to the main snoot later.

Hook snoots.

Use a 30cm long piece of Fluoro. Attach one end to the Swivel tee.

Now slide on a 2 inch piece of Spacer tubing. This is going to keep the Hook snoot well away from tangling with the mainline.

Stretch the tubing over the knot and the eye of the swivel.

Cut a piece of Bait foam 1cm by 2cm. Pierce through the middle. Then trim the foam into a cylindrical, aerodynamic shape.
This bait foam is optional, amd will serve 2 purposes - to get the bait suspended in the water rather than just hanging down;
Also to provide a base with which you can build a bait if a bigger bait is required.
Colour, size and shape of the foam is variable... it just gives you more options.

Slide the foam on, then tie on a DH55 #6 hook. Slide the tag end through the bait foam as well to secure it tighter...
This will be your top hook snoot.
Total length of the snoot should be approx 25cm.

Now make a Bottom Hook snoot, following exactly the same procedure, except use a #8 hook.

Different size hook just gives more variation to the trace by allowing different bait possibilities.

Now cut a 1m piece of Fluoro for your Main Snoot.

Close up...

Now about 30 cm down from the top Hook snoot, do exactly the same for the bottom Hook snoot.

Finally, tie a small spider hitch loop at the end of the mainline snoot - this is where you will attach your sinker.

So what it looks like...

Notice that the Swivel tee keeps the swivel perpendicular to the mainline. If only a sliding swivel was used, then the swivel would still hang downwards at an angle, allowing tangles to develop. With the Swivel tee and the space tubing, the snoot is held well away from the main snoot, making tangles less of a problem.

All done!

Excellent trace setup!!! Definately going to use a few adaptations of it on my scratching setup!!

There are a few ways to make getting stuck with this trace less prone to happen.  I've seen a similar kind of trace with some adjustments below fished on strand reefs for a whole session without breaking off once landing i think 4 kob, 3 spotties and a smoothie.

1. Use braid. When you pick up to reel in the setup lifts immediately and doesnt drag over structure.

2. Use circle hooks in stead of J Hooks, again if you lift sharply and reel the circle shouldnt get stuck, as you can't set a circle if you strike....( you will still get stuck but a lot less)

3. I would prefer a swivel on the main snood that can slide up and down between the 2 fig8 knots with beads, and only a 10cm sinker trace of .40 for 2 reasons.

a) If you get a fish on on the bottom hook the sinker is right with it, so when you are lifting the fish over a reef, the sinker is coming over as well.

b) If you get a fish on on the top hook on this rig, with 10cm sliding trace the sinker is about 70cm from the fish.  With the way above it's dangling almost a metre below it.  It will take some luck to get the fish over a reef without the sinker getting stuck, bringing the .40 thinner sinker line into play.

Some good points!
Definitely if you're fishing over reefs/rocks, then rather join thinner line on the bottom for the sinker to break off if needed.

Problem with just a sliding swivel is that it defeats the object of being anti-tangle...
The Swivel tee sits perpendicular to the mainline, then the tubing keeps the hook snoot well away from the mainline; whereas with just a swivel, it will hand at an angle...

cool makes sense sliding it would definate end up a neat nest with the bottom rig....

Change the bottom fig 8 into a swivel? and have the sinker fixed to that with .40 10cm.

very cool idea Reefs... (clap) my thinking was also the same as Marthins' last illustration with perhaps a swivel under the bottom swivel T with lighter mono sinker snoot only for reefs/rocks...great post... :rck" have some  :+ cred: I've never even seen these thingymajigs...swivel tees, funny swivels and the tube... :dunno:

lofty i'm going to check if you can't use some other tubing from the hardware store....

Safish exactly... a nice chokka blob on one, and the bottom one gets a prawn or worm for the bottom feeders.....

The Spacer tubing that they sell in Carp stores is very cheap... think I paid R15 for 50cm?
But what you guys must look for are the Korda anti-tangle sleeves as used by Carp fishermen. They are stiffer and work the best. Dean Pretorius uses them on his scratching traces.

P.S. The sports come when you have a decent size blacktail on each hook on a light tackle outfit!!!!
