Fishing For Leeries In Eastern Cape
« on: August 25, 2010, 01:05:22 PM »
Hi guys just looking for some tips on targeting Garrick in the Bushmans and Kariega River in December/January, been trying to get one for a long time down there with poppers, plugs and other lures...

I was just wondering what your guys opinions are of live bait for Garrick in the Eastern Cape estuaries? I skeem Mullet and/or Pinky would be the way to go but would just like to hear what live baits you guys have got Garrick on before?

Also which would be better a circle or j hook??? Thanks  :tkx:

In bushmans river i'v used a nice big float with a 1.5m trace underneath with a mullet, works like a charm from a boat, and you'll get to see the leerie turn, and grab your mullet!

Thanks Nightfox I appreciate that, will try it out! Did you ever try that out from the shore underneath the bridge? As I do not have access to a boat unfortunately!

I don't know about that area but here they go for Mullet, Streepie (karanteen) and any other abundant bait fish. Don't be scared to use big live baits and I would recommend circle hooks. When trolling hook it through the to lip or when at anchor between the head and dorsal fin. I will be on the water soon targeting them and will try and get some photos. Tight Lines  fshg

Wk get anything that floats! An indian canoe or dingy, you catch bigger fish with smaller boats lol, haven't tried the bridge, but the spot next to the n2 bridge on bushmans side right in front of than big new house is a good spot, for big cob aswell, just go on a neap tide, to much weed during spring tide. You can try the float at sandbar because the current won't take the float to shore there, and as safish said, don't be shy for large livebait for leerie

Ok great will try that spot! I presume you are talking about that house with like 4 stories? Have caught a few Kob on a float at the sandbar before, as you know the current is strong! So i will try a live bait there in December! Thanks again Nightfox  :tite

We used sandprawn with a float at the sandbar to catch the cob, some nights you get like 40 cob, some of them size! Did you see the big elf there in the light?

Great! Yeah the Kob can be quite thick there on occasions! Please can you tell me where you pump sand prawn? I only know of a spot in cannon rocks and its a bit of a shlep as my house is in Kenton... Is it the island/sandbank in the bushmans river??? I have seen some big Elf at night at the Sandbar and last year I saw a guy land a 50cm Shad on lure there, I was amazed! Its a great fishing spot, in my opinion something is wrong though because the fishing has really changed there over the last couple of years!

That big sandbank just to the left of bushman's slip, on the push or 3 hours outgoing, it's much easier where there's shallow water covering the bank, walk to the other side of the bank or at the grass bank of the sandbank, just watch out for that electric landmines!! I know they used to dump all the seafood waste through the kitchen window in the past, like prawn shells, fish guts etc. I think that attracted the fish there.
