Am report on our East Coast from Gonubie to Kei

My brothers at our place just north of coffee bay had 11-12 deg. lots of fish washing up and a boat at sea said lots of stunned fish floating on the surface. mainly tropical species it semed, incl fire fish, all sorts of angel fish and surgeons etc.

Yes, much the same, triggers, angels, barracuda, lionfish......... it was a first for me and the fishing was bad, only managed a small sand shark and two Cape stumpies the whole time!!

   but perhaps the cold water bodes well for a sardine run in 2017 , warm water the past 3 years on the KZN south coast is blamed by some experts for the sardines not hitting the area  .

The water is also freezing cold on this side. I did not measure it but estimate it to be around 10-12 degrees if not colder.

Very strange, I have no idea whats happening and its a shame to see fish struggling with the colder waters.

I'm not an expert but as far as I know the water temp around Eastern Cape is mainly influenced by the wind direction. East brings cold water and West will warm up the water. We had a week or more of fairly persistent Easterly so that is probably why !

  Mornings Folks ...an attempt to answer the above re the cold water...yes the east wind does bring the cold Benguela current in and we had 7 days continues east due to two VERY stubborn high pressure systems AND I get info from Marion now and then and the last email did mention a large upwelling of the Antarctic current pushing northwards...so all these factors produced these very cold waters off of our coast ...well ..weve had west for two days now and west predicted for the next 4 days ...Soo...that warmer Aghulas should be pushing closer shortly...

100% we had four days of strong easterlies down there, same thing happens in Durban quite often if the NE blows for extended periods!!

  AND..on a sadder note irrespective as to how and why BUT these two raggies were hooked and landed by fisherman....and obviously not released properly.....

Sustained wind direction -> warm surface water if pushed offshore via Eckman transport -> upwelling (cold water/nutrients inshore)

  Mornings East Coasters.....you get a perfect storm and THEN you get a weather system that screams GO FISH!!!...As you look at this synoptic you will see just that ...a "perfect storm" for fishing that is!!![/size]With this west puffing the last three days and the barometer still dropping , it is lining up for a DAMN fine fiching weekend , conditions wise...The tides are also very good for our Jikeleza and tomorrow sees you with a low at 07h25 and on Sunday at 08h03...early AM starts are on the cards for this weekend , the water has cleaned up somewhat and the temps sitting at a much warmer 16/17...
THEN as you look at that synoptic you will notice a high riding in between two cold fronts and then this means the baro will be rising from tomorrow steadly through the weekend as well as coming off a good west wind....VERY good indicators for some good fishing this weekend , also moving into a bright moon spring , so watch those tides as they start to push....[/font]
Folks...let me say this as a heads up ..TOMORROW morning is the window of opportunity...keep this in mind...
Also remember , that most reef fish have been ducking and diving the cold water over the last week and MUST be pretty keen to get back into their inshore gutters and gulleys...fresh bait and make sure those lure hooks are sharp and ready!!!
Spots to look out for would certainly be all the deep water points ...Gonubie....Kwelerga,,,Glen Gariff....Bulugha ...Queensberry.and Cintsa Point are certainly worth a look....The Cints beach areas to Cefane also worth a look as that tide turns and pushes in....
