Myself, Darryn and Jason went through to Flamingo Dam once again, after our awesome PB session the previous weekend (http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=14122.0). We arrived just after 6am, with the outside temperature sitting on 1 degree, and the mist and wind dropping it below zero, we got our rods ready and waited eagerly for the sun to come up. It was freezing. The water was very cold as well, so i didnt actually expect us to get any fish. We did though, the fishing was tough but we had 3 chances.

Just after 8.30am I got my first run on my current Carp setup  :hnthnt: Kingfisher Poseidon gully Hunter 6 foot rod, Quantum triax 30 spinning reel paired with Rovex Viros braid, 10lb, a nice screaming run, but a desperately poor fight, probably because the fish was lethargic from the cold water, a quick fight was over and I got an awesome 2kg Common Carp, I was shocked at the size because after it ran it came in quite tamely into our landing net.

Then we waited, and waited, and Nivz popped by with a few beers that lifted our spirits, Darryn then had a screaming run at about 12, hook was set but then popped shortly into the fight, very disappointing.

Then Jason got his fish at around 4pm, also around the 2kg mark but this Common Carp fought like its life depended on it, a strong fish in good condition!

Winter is definitely setting in and bank angling is going to get tougher in the months to come!

Yesterday (Sunday) we went to Modderfontein Dam once more and had a fun session... Darryn lost a bus of a Carp (Around 7-8kgs) and Jason landed a +/- 2kg fish... Cant wait for summer at this spot, I think it will be a gold mine!

This chap has a built in carp measurement system - a 2kg carp is roughly the size of his bicep

Back at Modderfontein dam yesterday, was damn cold, we arrived at 7am and the car temperature gauge read 1 degree, and then there was an icy wind blowing straight off the water. But never the less we were fishing again! Lines were in and we waited... 4 and a half hours later the first bit of action... And it was my turn  :happ: :happ: a strong fish was eventually landed and it was fat! It was heavy for its length as its stomach was bulging, a quick photo and a quick release...

Then Jay's rod ran, after a lot of line bites and fish feeding on the bomb. We actually started casting at the tailing fish we could see on the opposite bank and this bait lay for 40 minutes (Our quickest hook up at this dam), not a big fish, but a beauty and some action to keep us busy.

Then the surprise of the season, another cast at the tailing fish (Although this was another 4 hours later) produced a Barbel! Spoken to a lot of guys at the spot and they havent caught Barbel here since mid April, they reckon because the dam is so shallow the Barbel have buried themselves for Winter, so this is a great sign of things to come, it took a size 6 owner hook and banana dough, brilliant fish, also had the strongest jaw of any Barbel I have held, it clamped down proper on both mine and Jason's finger.

Thanks Charles, considering the dam is not really taken care of, and is polluted in some areas, the fish are in fantastic condition.

:hehe: :hehe: Ziggy, tried fishing micro there a few times, think its because its Winter have had no success, but when Summer comes I reckon the micro's will be gale! Because I have seen the cormorants catching 3-5cm fish every now and then, I just need to figure out how to get them.

Murphy's law - if you target big fish, you will catch small ones...if you target small fish you will catch big ones!

In Nambia a few years ago, I had no bait...so I thought I would try and catch a small fish to fillet for bait. So I took a small hook and light trace and used a mussel as bait - within 3 minutes I hooked a 4kg kob. I managed to bring it in using the waves, and as it landed on the beach and the wave retreated, the small hook straightened....I rugby tackled the kob and managed to bring it safely to my camp where the neighbours had a big smoker - had enough smoked kob for a few days!

Thanks Kallie!

Thats the thing Ziggy, I have tried micro hooks and caught nothing, so I just fish very small hooks on my carp traces instead (Size 12 owners)
