Modderfontein Dam once more yesterday, was the toughest session we have done yet, 6.30am to 6.30 pm and only 2 fish, but the fish are becoming more active, especially the Barbel, think we should be having lots of fun in the next month or 2. Jason got another fat Carp and Gav got a beautifully coloured Cat  (clap)

About a week a go I arrived back from Dullstroom, where I fished Millstream Farm, only posting this now because I had Chicken Pox which presented itself to me while I was fly fishing, terrible thing Chicken Pox, damn. But anyway, just a short report, because the fishing was terrible to say the least. The wind blew a gale and the wind direction was changing all throughout each day which made finding a spot that holds fish was extremely difficult to fish. All in all I managed 16 Rainbow Trout 14 hens and 2 cock fish, 15 released and 1 kept which was the biggest of the trip, 1.1kgs. Which was awesome, I was walking around one of the dams, Coleridge, looking for a spot to cast, where I saw a fish close to the reeds feeding. I slowly walked away from the bank and found a vantage point and watched the fish for a bit, noting her movements. It was in a very inaccessible spot, so I did a bit of wading until I was in a reedbed, a few meters away from the fish, the water was freezing by the way. As I got there, she came to the surface and I put the fly a few feet from her and on the drop she hit it, awesome take and a great fight in fairly shallow water.

I fished many flies, nymphs, dries and wets, but the Woolly Bugger caught all my fish! This fly is a life saver, most fish were around 300-400 grams with one fish of about 800 grams being the second biggest. Looking back, as frustrating as it was, it was good to experience some tough fly fishing again, the fish Gods p;ut me back into place thats for sure! Heres some pics  :trout:

1.1kg

It went down to -6 this morning

Fishing seems to be getting slower at Modderfontein as it warms up, hope this is because of spawning, but we managed a quick outing on Saturday and Kyle got a nice fish...

Fish Eagle Dam - Modderfontein Nature Reserve

We had the privilege of being invited back to fish the Modderfontein Nature Reserve in the name of non scientific research. The reserve is currently looking for people to perform a fish study on their 4 dams and streams/rivers and we are hopefully in line to get the job. It will be great if we do but until everything is sorted we just have to hold thumbs.

Anyway, myself, Gavin and Jason met close to the reserve at 5.30am as the gates opened at 6, and we were all thrilled to be fishing this wild area so close to industria! Gavin supplied us with a nice cup of coffee while we waited and we admired 100's of Guineafowl and some Red Hartebeest before we entered the reserve. Once we were inside, slightly before 6, we drove the short distance to the largest dam on the property, fish eagle dam, and unpacked and setup as quickly as possible.

Our lines were in the water and after 45 seconds after I put my first rod down the baitrunner reel went screaming off, one of the quickest bites I have ever had. A smallish Common Carp was the result and shortly after that everyone was into the Carp...

Throughout the day we landed a total of 34 Carp between 200 grams and 2 kilograms. A variety of baits worked but the more "natural" baits worked best... Plain floaties, brown bread, dough and kariba red worms. It was really difficult to keep 2 carp rods in the water and we eventually all ended up with just one carp rod in the water.

The carp were in beautiful condition and the fact that there were so many juvenile fish around is a great sign, the water here is pristine and so is the condition of the fish. These fish are truly wild, and have been exposed to minimal amounts of fishing pressure, as you will see from the photos. Between the 3 of us we landed an estimated total of 25.7 kilograms of Common Carp.

We were also fishing for Barbel and managed 4, between 2 and 5kgs, a total weight of 10.5kgs. They were caught on worms and ox liver. Jason had a memorable time landing a 5kg Barbel on an extremely ultra light setup... A 5 foot Berkley lightning rod, shimano sienna 500 and 7lb Double X, it was a fight of at least 10 minutes and Jason nearly got spooled twice, it was awesome to watch.

All in all we caught 38 fish between 6.20am and 5pm, an amazing day with awesome company!
