It's ridiculous! I might get shot down here, but I don't agree with this kind of therapy at all. All it does is make you forget about your problems and issues, without tackling them head on and dealing with the problems that made you depressed in the first place. 6 months after being on anti-depressants, your problems will still all be there because all you've done is swept them under the carpet!!
It's a similar position to the whole cholesterol medication debacle, where the marketing of Prozac/anti-depressants etc is funded by a multi-billion dollar industry, bogus research all funded by them! The Pharmaceutical Industry has a lot to answer for.

only pill i need is a fishing trip every now and again regardless what type offshore carp bass doesnt really matter

I normally apply a few measures of Single Malt whiskey to the affected area.

GP therapy - take a pill and pay as you walk out the door :cnfzd . My GP has been trying to put me on anti anxiety/depressant pills for over a year now and I refuse. I was also taking an anti-inflammatory every night for arthritis in hands - I used to drop just about everything I picked up at least once. 3 weeks into Banting lifestyle and I cannot believe the difference:
No anxiety (no more Urbanol)
No jumpy leg syndrome at night
No hiatus hernia pain
No joint pain (after a whole day of making traces)
No heartburn
Sustained energy throughout the day
A "vet tekkie" old fashioned bicycle size tyre around my middle (from a tractor size)
Dropped to size 34 jeans (whoop whoop first time since I had kids)
A zest for living which I forgot I had - I wake and and feel like dancing :yipee: and the food is really great - I don's miss carbs/sugar at all, not even my old favourite slap chips.

That's awesome Krissi, just eat the right foods and away you go NO DRUGS NEEDED, just a fishing rod.

The wrong forum for this question I reckon, as a general rule to be a fisherman you have to be an optimist (against all odds some times). Optimists seldom suffer depression.
But some people need a helping hand for a bit to calm the waters while they get their ducks in a row. Happy pills don't fix depression, they just give you a chance to sort it out yourself, like using a crutch while your broken leg heals.
-
Without doubt happy pills have 'their place' and some people are better off with them, BUT (as with Ritalin) they are so easily prescribed to all and sundry that its downright scary - doctors no longer treat the cause......only the symptoms!! :-(

I agree 100% with you Tony.

I should be ok for the rest of the day ..

you get people with a defect where there is a severe lack of serotonin. My dad had that, and it was horrible. He used pills that got that level sorted. At the same time he became a Christian, and well no more depression. He didnt want to live for 45 years and tried more than once, then became a Christian, found out what he was living for and God took him 2 years later.
I'm on Lamitor, for eplilepsy however it's also prescribed for bipolar and or depression.
-
i take medication and i am a firm believer that they work.
I suffered from a nervous breakdown in 2008 and have been on and off medication since then.
I feel that they do help me and i have tried to go off them, but my persona changes and i become a very short and angry person.
it helps balance the endorphyn level in my body.
-
Must agree with Rory, it scary how many people are on them! I personally have never had any, and niether anyone in my immediate family (my wife and children).
Another scary one is the number of people in Ritallin. Students using them to study, business men using them to get better output. I tink it's a schedule 5 drug, it may be 7, but you need a doctor's prescription to get the stuff. Very scary! I battle with my attention span, and have done so for all of my life, but God has been good, and I have found ways to work around most of the issues (lists and spreadsheets). I just can't see myself going on that stuff just so I can focus better.

going to try vegetable garden therapy first as im not depressed by any means just frustrated/stressed about the way people seem to be going business these days
-
Nothing wrong with the homeopathic route Rory.
Not my place to say so, but is this not perhaps a symptom of your recent bad experiences.
Sometimes another path may be better in order to seek a solution. Recently a bud of mine took up MMA with a personal trainer after a hijacking - costs about the same as seeing a counsellor / shrink but she is fitter, stronger, more confident, eats and sleeps better and will not be caught out again.
She doesn't laugh as much though :lolo:

Was diagnosed 4 years a go with Chronic Depression. I was an absolute mess, made wrong decisions when running my won business, full of anxiety to the effect that I would throw up 3-4 times a day (This was over 2 and a half years). Tried to stay away from pills, but since I accepted it and started taking the pills my life has changed around completely. They worked for me. I could not function, literally. My problem is a genetic problem as my father, brother and Aunt all have bipolar, and with regards to the genes, a son or daughter will either get bipolar or chronic depression at some stage in their life (Well there is a 50% chance). So I am lucky enough in that case, because Bipolar is the most horrible chemical imbalance I have ever seen.
I am all for the pills. Started off on a bout 7, stabilised and now I take 3. I have never felt better, and accepting the fact that I needed to take pills changed my life.

Tough one and sometimes even tougher to admit / disclose to friends and more specifically to "bosses" in the corporate world.
Took strain for many years .......a monster at times.......swallowed pride went for help.......BI POLAR.
Worst of all despite meds i ended up losing my job as a very senior manager in a corporate ( 15yrs ) 2 years ago. I had just lost my Ballie and had a heart attack yet ones judgement, focus still can go awry.......end up in altercations etc.
Fortunately for my FAMILY, my FAITH and my FISHING ( maybe that should be first lol ) I see the glass half full and take it day by day.
There are tooooo many people out there that NEED help and sometimes the Happy pills are inevitable.
HAPPIER NOTE.....despite this crap weather I am going to my local dammetjie and spin for a cople of hours and even if I just catch a smile I'm cool with that.

Reefz... as a medical man, I'm a little surprised at your comment. That being said, I was of the same opinion until it happened to me. There's no doubt that there is over-prescription of a lot of meds, and you're right, Big Pharma has a lot to answer for.
I had a pretty rough setback some years ago and was unable to cope on a daily basis. I could not think coherently, could not focus on any job at hand and basically fell apart spectacularly. I started on Fluoxetine and within a few days, I was pretty much back in control (most patients take longer to feel the effects). I had no idea how debilitating depression could be.
The thing about my case was that I was not clinically (or chronically) depressed. It was an event that set off a kind of emotional snowball effect in me, and it needed a chemical intervention to interrupt that snowball. I cannot speak for those who are clinically depressed, but I can only imagine it must be awful.
I was on antidepressants for about 6 months and then stopped. I really disliked taking them and disliked the fact that they interrupted my sleep a lot. But they served their purpose until I was able to function again at work and socially.

I don't doubt that there are certain cases that actually NEED the medication for a genuine problem. My issue is with the GP prescribing these willy-nilly. The whole crux of this thread is the shocking fact of how many people are taking them, when the vast majority really don't need them.

Now that i can't fault at all... not just happy drugs add antibiotics and others but yes... easy way out is usually first option.

I've been on them this time for a couple of years; many years ago I contracted teh Epstein Barr virus or is it's popularly known yuppy flu, I never had a cell phone or a BMW so not sure exactly how I qualified to be a yuppie :dunno:
Over time about 3 years in total I got back to normal, if anyone whose been through that can define normal, and with a little pill every day I was fine.
I stopped taking them about 5+ years ago and went on my way, as the pressures of living and working here increased I changed back into a very difficult if not impossible to deal with individual, with a complete sense of humour breakdown.
I went to my GP and asked if I could go back onto the pills and that's where we are.
Just ask my beloved wife of 37 years which version of me she prefers and it's the one with a sense of humour.
I don't think I could drink enough Malt every day to make the same difference on a continual basis
So it does work for me

I would really like to respond to this thread next week . Bit pressed for time right now.

Medicine should be seen in the same light as a crutch is to someone with a broken leg.You use the crutch till you are strong enough to walk without it Unfortunately there are some people who are crippled and can never throw their crutches away.As a practising pharmacist for the last 33 years, I have seen both scenarios played out countless times.
Yes I do agree that often medicine is prescribed for a seemingly quick fix instead of more time spent on addressing the source of the problem. However I have seen countless people who have benefited in life changing ways from so called happy pills.
(Some examples quoted above)
If you have never suffered from depression or bipolar or Add you can never know the life changing effect many of these medicines have on the sufferers or their families.
I firmly believe that medicine is a gift from God, its just man that sometimes uses it indiscriminately.
Perhaps be a little more gentle and supportive to those folk who have no choice but to take these meds
-
That makes sense.

Back in 2001 i too was diagnosed with chronic depression, i functioned (worked) however was unbearable to live with, became rather blunt and nasty mostly to the people closest to me?? I had an immense amount of work related pressure, financial, relationship issues etc and did not even realise i was chronically depressed. It eventually took a tongue lashing from my old man that made me decide to go see a psychologist or psychiatrist never remember the difference. Anyhow she prescribed medication and after 6 months of taking it i popped out the deep hole i was in. It was only after taking the meds that i actually realised how depressed i had been. I took the meds for another 2 months with progressively lower doses until i stopped taking them completely.
The one thing i did not like about the pills i was on is that they literally made me numb to the world, as they supressed all emotion i was neither happy nor sad and the best way i can describe it was that i was numb to emotion. So i do believe there is a place for the happy pills however as stated one has to be very careful of them as they do seem to be prescribed too easily these days! If you are not sure rather get a 2nd opinion from another Dr.
-
There is no perfect pill or mix of pills that have no side effects to some degree. Often one has to play around with different combo's to find the most effective treatment with the minimal side effects.
It however it is critical not to rely on medicine alone.
The best combination starts with God, and add medicine and the love and support of family and friends, mixed in with time and patience.
If you are unsure or unhappy with your treatment, get a second opinion- you are worth it.
The most important person in your life(excluding God) is you and you cannot overflow or give to others unless you are full yourself.

Very interesting topic, I've been there, I was diagnosed with all sorts of disorders. I was put on a cocktail of pills, 11 per day, 6 different types. Then I started serving the Lord and He took care of my problems. Guess what? No more depression. I have since removed the pills from my diet, do I have bad days? Yes I do. When Im feeling down, I now look up. It's about solving the problem with as little chemical intervention (pills) as possible. I agree that sometimes meds are nessasary, but in saying that I can garentee that the best antidepressant is the love of Jesus.

Joff if this was Facebook would I like your remark " like" a thousand times. I have firm belief Jesus solves problems!
-
This is a very interesting topic, thanks for sharing.
The everyday pressures of work, violence etc. put an enormous amount of stress on individuals and families and each and every person have their own ways of dealing with them, be it with medication , religion or socially. I do believe in my case especially family support / discussions is of massive importance.

Related but in a different sense, Dr. wanted to put me on the pill for depressions etc. affecting my this and that, turns out about 2 months after I stopped taking Lariam malaria tablets the depression stopped.
AND, most important for me as well, cast your worries onto Him!

Just don't give Doxycycline to kids under 10. It's a Tetracycline antibiotic, and we all know what that does to developing teeth, right?!

Personally I think all those anti malaria things are nasty. Took Mefliam and had bad side effects including affecting my eyesight (at-least that is my claim). Stopped taking it in 2002 after 4 months, had malaria two months later and again a month later. Since then nothing and I work in high risk areas. Use common sense and cover up.
-
I have had malaria ten times now.The ninth dose near killed me, ended up on life support, lost my spleen, needed to be jump started a few times... not pretty. My advice is suffer the side effects of the pills for a couple of weeks rather than risk malaria, certainly for those who only visit malarial areas occasionally. Lariam was nasty, but mefliam is not too bad. Most important is quick treatment, get tested at the first flu like symptoms if you have been in a malaria area. The one that nearly took me down was due to late treatment, I was on pills so assumed it was just flu, by the time I picked it up it was too late.
-
I drink alot of coffee and smoke like a old ford escort in KZN's midlands, if i still had to take pills, the world would be a whole diffrent planet for those around me :hyst:
Seriously, deal with the issues, don't take Prozac - I've attended more suicides in my life than any person should be exposed to and they all (most of them) were on Prozac, don't watch TV in the US, you'll become convinced that you need some truckload of med's within two hours and that you need stuff like "Abilify" which is nothing more than a booster for the anti-depresants that you're already taking, no jokes!!!!
Stop, smell the roses, smell the coffee you're about to have and if you can't go fishing frequently, get out of the house and into the garden, even if it's just to have a smoke on the lawn, sitting down on the grass with your ..., look at the stars at night and then see if you still need "happy pills" I call this " Using the switch" if stuff gets too much, flip the switch to the OFF position, it's your perogative, it's your switch use it!

LGF you have a point :corrct: .
I have used the pills and they made a difference to my family at the time. A hell of a difference. Trying to be macho is not always the answer.
Now a challenge to you . flip the switch on you smokes , different crutches for different folks . happy pills are cheaper covered by med aid , don't smell, and probably healthier. :toppie:

Colin you are so right Buddy :resp:
I think what I was trying to say is that in general, medication is just toooooooo easy to obtain and to take, sometimes ads will convince people that they are suffering form some or other dreaded disease and need these or those meds for it in order to feel better again. It started in the US, where really, they were advertisng this drug "Abilify" to boost the person's anti-depressant. There's actually a show running on DSTV titled "In Pills We Trust" nicked off the back of a dollar bills that originally stated "In GOD We Trust"
Now, here in SA, there's ads running doing the same, Antagolin, for insulin resistance (For fatties like me). Hell walk into Dischem this afternoon and see all the ads in-store for meds "THAT YOU NEED" if you look at then for just a second too long, you'll be convinced that you are in dire need of these tabs or syrup's etc etc.
Not saying be macho and don't take the pills, if needs be and really NEEDS BE, then by all means make use of them, I however cannot risk the possibility of pills getting into the same boat as my 36 cups of coffee and pack of smokes a day, theres no more seats available in my train named Addiction and thats why I try and sort out what grinds me down if i cannot i apply my survival method (a story for another day or perhaps a PM if you'd like) and fish regulary, walk in the garden, really smell at least 3 cups of coffee before i drink them, oh and occupy my mind with the lure making Obsession I have, then I don't have to think of all the crap that would make me the best user and most probably a share holder in all the companies thath produces these kinds of meds.

Just a warning to those with kiddies, ritalin's active methylphenidate, is a sister chemical to Tik, methampethamine, which is itself prescribed to kiddies in a less potent form too in other countries. It doesn't relax them but gives them intense, controlled by slow release, focus. It also primes their brain for addiction later on via the dopamine pathways. This methylphenidate has exactly the same effects as speed but is actually more intense, considerably more potent and more habit forming than speed, just a friendly heads up. Ritalin is not the answer haha!
First for anyone with depression, get off the sugar and get your gut flora and fauna right again, eat dirt even if you have to..dirt is half joke.. Your gut bacteria are involved with your serotonin right, get up and down cycles under control by eliminating processed foods and sugar and see the difference. Eat well and feel good, drink spring water that you get yourself and see the difference, eat veggies that you grow yourself and see the therapy value for your self. My 2c. Drugs are not answers, just tools to finding answers. Once you find the root of the problem, ie, serotonin or dopamine issue, then diet and lifestyle is the best long lasting change you can make to bring these systems back to homeostasis. Legumes and red meat feed dopamine as does getting off sugar, getting your gut and getting off sugar gets serotonin in check. Sometimes a visionary experience with a natural serotonin mimic helps with the entire thing but that heavily depends on the person and situation and of course access.
-
Damn solid advice :corrct:

That is YOUR opinion. The laat lammetjie in our family battled throughout her primary school career. Poor marks, lack of focus, inability to follow instructions which all led to very poor relationship between her and my mom. Constant fighting at home. Teachers eventually said she would need to think very carefully about subject choices to ensure she managed to get through her high school years.
Luckily in her first year of high school she saw a Psychologist who referred her to a Doctor who prescribed her Ritalin. Fast forward to her senior phase of high school and she will now be awarded her academic colours this year and is cruising through her maths and science. Two subjects she was told she would never pass. So please don't make the broad statement that Ritalin is not the answer. In the right circumstances Ritalin can be life changing

I have been on Serdep 100 mg for two years since my divorce, wich came as a huge shock. I could probably cope without it, but I have noticed that I am a more pleasant person when being on it! I am less agressive and dont get agitated as easily.
Raising two kids by yourself, is not an easy job, in fact, I have no idea how so many single woman cope financially or emotionaly doing this.
Also the fact that I only get to fish the saltwater once or perhaps twice a year doesnt help either.

It is my opinion yes..But way back in the day when I was an amateur chemist, I learned first hand that that ritalin and meth work EXACTLY the same, the stuff in ritalin is just more fiendish and way more potent. I hadn't touched meth in years when I made some "ritalin" more than a decade ago, only had the speed once or twice at a rave in the 90's, and never touched ritalin again since I figured that it pretty much the same. Like they work identical, the same. Like meth is yellowfin and methylphenidate is bluefin the same, both tuna, both fish, both, both, one just badder, not meth as bad as it is etc... Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Slow release binders make all the difference in those innocent little tablets. So be warned that is all. Short term fix that works exceptionally well yes, but not long term answer. In your case you have isolated the chemical root of lack of dopamine as creating symptoms. Be sure to initiate other things that will lift the spirit, like achieving goals and through hobbies and healthy social interaction, seriously look into yoga and/or meditation and also include in the diet those natural foods which contain the precursers l-dopa and tyrosine, daily. Also look carefully at sugar and its inclusion in the diet through processed foods and drinks (cooldrinks and fruitjuices etc.) and try get in control of that and drop the intake right down and get through the initial crashes as sugar and ones blood sugar goes hand in hand with up and down dopamine cycles. And just be warned that is all, I have had many friends who were on ritalin as kids and most as adults just kept on searching for that dopamine fix. Some found it in surfing, fishing, speafishing and rock climbing and others found it in a pipe or other fix..Forewarned is forearmed. Most of us are now older and wiser and joke about being ritalin babies..But ja serious stuff to play with your brain chemistry on a long term basis, do not take lightly. Don't want to offend and it is only my opinion, but take care.
Also watch "the sugar movie" if you haven't, it is an eye opener.
