Here is a Comprehensive Photographic Tutorial on how to Service and Maintain a Shimano Sustain FG5000.
This tutorial could be used for all the Sustain models - bar minor differences, they are pretty similar.

DO NOT unscrew the 2 smaller screws! They open up the Anti-reverse bearing with it's springs and parts.

At this point, you might choose to stop, because from here onwards, the Service becomes fairly complex and tricky.
With the gearbox exposed, you can use a toothbrush soaked in Benzine to remove all old grease, and dirt. Once done, allow to dry and regrease thoroughly.

For those who want to go further into a detailed service... Let's go!

Remove the Retainer plate at the back of the reel.

The Worm gear and Bushing

Clean all parts in Benzine, either soaking or scrubbing with a toothbrush. Allow to dry properly, then brush generously with grease.

RE-ASSEMBLY - Put it back together!!

Now for the Drive Gear...

Regrease and replace the Main bearing on the Drive gear

Awesome...

Now... for those who want to take it a step further....

HANDLE SERVICE

All pretty straight forward. No great problem to service the Handle.

DRAG WASHERS

Also pretty simple.
These are oiled felt washers. Do not grease them, they were meant to be oiled with a quality oil.

Now for the LINE ROLLER - A spot on most reels that is most often sadly neglected.

To re-assemble, slide the bearing into the Grey Bushing from the lipped side. Then slide the Bushing into the Line roller from the thick side.
NB:
The Thicker side of the Bushing and the Line Roller both face the Screw side of the assembly.
Before assembling this system, lube all the parts with a good Oil.

THE OSCILLATING SLIDER

THE BAIL ARM MECHANISM

Now you can unscrew the top screw...

Be careful that you don't lose the CLICK PIN AND SPRING WHEN OPENING!!

Now you can thoroughly clean the Rotor of any beachsand and dirt. Scrub all parts with Benzine, and regrease lightly.

Now that's what you call a thorough Service!!

All done...!

This will come in very useful in the future. Can't believe that bearing got damaged so quickly. It just shows that you need to service your reel out of the box.

Ya for sure Louis... a bit of grease in the frame would have sorted that quickly.

Will be doing a review of the Stradic and Sustain in the near future. Off hand, there aren't any "weakpoints" as such, in this reel, it's pretty awesome! It's the smoothest reel I have ever felt, but I will go through the reasons for this in the next article.

Ok, have upgraded this thread...

This is now a comprehensive service manual on the Sustain. Can be applied to the Stradic as well, as both reels are quite similar.
It now consists of:

120 Photo's including added:

Bail ARM service
Line Roller service
Entire Gearbox dismantling and re-assembly
Oscillating slider
Anti-reverse Mechanism
Handle Service

Thanks brilliant work I had my sustain for two years lovely reel .I just replaced main gear and pinion gear . They were really worn I was wondering if I should have done the idle gear I did not notice any ware the paw was slightly worn any comments.

Without looking at the reel, it's difficult to say whether the Idle gear needs replacing as well? It doesn't take as much force as the Main and Pinion gears, so it should be fine.

Thanks so much it seems to very smooth. I also replaced the lower worm gear bush with a bearing. I must say the reel has been amazing I drop shot almost every weekend wading. Seen to Mozambique outing so was not surprised when I had to replace the set of gears. Great tutorial you put together.
