kob on rappies
« on: May 23, 2012, 10:49:15 AM »
The guys going with me to mazeppa are very keen to try for some kob on lure, now I know the recommended techniques for bucktails, spoons and paddle tails (in theory) but I'd like some advice on the rappies. What sort of size?
How does one weight the hooks?
Which models are most successful?
Retrieves?

Brad there are 2 articles written by Tommo on targeting Kob in the Surf and in estuaries... both are stickied at the top of this board. They should help a lot....

I've read both the articles I'm just a bit lost on things like how you weight the hooks? What size lures you should be getting that sort of thing

Brad if I was going to target Kob on lures, the first one I would get is the Clone Lure... made and designed by the Pautz brothers in the Eastern Cape. Slim lure, much like a stickbait, they come on weights right up to 3 oz, so no need for extra weights atc etc. The Pautz' have nailed some huge Kob with these lures.

The only lures i have ever caught kob on are Havoc lures. Hooks are weighted so you can cast them a mile.

One year when we went to henties we only used the Havocs for a couple of days and we caught loads of cob.

The ones i have are very old. I know they are / were made by a guy in PE or EL. Not sure if you can still buy them. Will quickly find out, will get back to you.

As far as I understand they are available in the EC tackle shops but not easy to find here in Gauteng. Ours were ordered from the Alcock brothers (not sure if they are the ones who make them?) sent via post from EC.

@ HP Clone lures have a page on facebook, check them out, unfortunately though it seems they do not have a dealer up here on the reef.

havoc are a stright crib of the old floating rapala magnum. they come with lead added to the hooks already.
I used to fish for kob on rapala in the bashee river (before the place was closed to all fishing).
we only used rapala magnum floating in cd 14 and cd 18. in any colour as we fished at night but redhead and blue mackrel were still tops, and cd14 semed more productive (IMO)
to weight them we used lead soldering wire (the thick 1) and wrapped as much as necessary (depending ont he wind strenght and direction) around the hook shanks. you can buy trebbles with lead added to the shanks already.
An unweighted lure stillhas a better action, but not the distance that was required at times.

A tip if buying the genuine rapala magnums. They are all hand tuned and when testing them, if they dont swim straight, they shave one side of the beak until it swims true. before buying them, open the box and check the beak, if its shaved, put it back. if it has sharp edges from being moulded, buy it. for some or other reason the ones that were shaved did not work as well. Use it done use it, but  it was well spoken about by guys that fished for kob down there.

That was hectic fishing, wading the bashee at night sometimes across a false channel to a sand bank to reach the real channel. saw a few 20+kg kob taken at our feet and was bumped by swimming things a few times. great idea at the time though.

HAVOCS HAVOCS all the way ! I have also heard form J bays side the Clones work really well !
Weighted trebles , and there you go !
Work them as slow as possible !

Obviously the Redhead and the Orange 'carrot' and my fev the mullet pattern they had !

I use to fish alot  with them for Kob and had a lt of success ! key to get them on the bottom . We fished 13 foot rods , but these day you will be able to caat them for longer with shorter sticks ...
Good had fun catching them on lures , very rewarding indeed !

I know that Charles Stewart used Raps yonks ago with great success. HP maybe chat to him he really knows all the details you require.

In the old days there was a rock in Mazeppa with a cable across. The guys used to get Cob there and on Raps. Just make sure about the tides etc but sure locals will help you out.

A couple of big jigheads 1 half or 2 oz , and some big paddletails also does some serious Damage on the Cob.You can DR, your Paddletail with a Bass rattle inserted in the tail , Kob go Bossies , for them them even at night ...

I would not suggest casting hard lure like Rapalas over very foul or Rocky areas , it might turn out a costly affair , rather give the Cheaper, option a try over the bricks like the Paddletail.
Any UA members had any success on the CLone ??
