Dullstroom - Walkerson's advice
« on: March 19, 2012, 06:21:31 PM »
Good afternoon,

Apologies to be asking for advice again  but I fished consistently so long ago I have non to offer.....

I have booked a few days in Dullies, Walkerson's in April and have no idea what flies i should use. I won't be able to fish too hard but will certainly have a cast before breakfast and before dinner. I used to fish the almost every other weekend but due to  circumstances and now living on Mud Island I fish very seldom  :unhap
I was thinking along the lines of the usual suspects like  Hare's ears, blood worms, a wooly bugger ( olive, navy , black and brown), rock worms and dries the good old DDD, klinkhammer and maybe a spider.
 any recommendations?

yellows vs troot was a tough decision......:)

Hey Rockspider, The trout should start beginning to spawn in April...

Use big Orange Zonkers, orange woolly buggers and orange Fritz's on sinking or intermediate retrieve... Let the line sink to the bottom and strip it back as fast as possible...

me too, it's been a bit dry lately......
tried fishing the test again a few weeks ago, hooked a lovely grayling, only to lose it. Took my buddy with me, it was his first time casting a fly on a river and he caught one!

Very nice, would love to catch a Grayling!

Here are some pics of fish I caught in April last year with the orange flies... Dragin nymphs and Lake Dragons in brown and orange will also get you some lekker fish!

Just a friendly notice...I booked the gretle cottage last year and was shocked by the accomodation. I left that same afternoon and luckily Duklstroom accomodation could find me another place.
The hotel looked nice as did the fishing dams. But the cottages were in a serious state. Could all have changed by now but please make sure.

i have been abroad for too long to give you appropriate advice, however,  i always carry the following in various colours and sizes as they work for various species of fish :) :

grhe, zak nymphs, ptn's, wooly buggers , DDD, white death, hoppers, elk hair caddis, dragon fly nymphs

When fish start showing their spawning colours not many flies will hook you a decent trout.

If you fish static along reeds, structure or where you can see them. Use a strike indicator fairly small, use two nymphs below it. One can be bright to act as an attractor and the other one a #16 Nymph in Black/Olive/ Natural will produce good fish. All the fish will be caught on the #16 nymph.

Yes a Wooly Bugger will catch you Trout just about any time during the year....

But these come to small flies in Winter....

Note the #16 Olive GRHE on it's snout.

A Close-Up of the fly....

Small flies, catch small fish....

So for me, winter fishing is done with small flies, cause I like catching small fish w;k

Saw it as one w;k
Next time I go to the "Hatchery" I will invite you along.
Apparently any fly works as long as it's an Epol Fly. :rotfl
