leeukloof estate
« on: February 15, 2012, 07:55:10 PM »
Howzit,

I am off to leeukloof estate this weekend. I have read favourable reports about the  place and i am sure i wont be dissapointed. I would appreciate some advise on the following:

1) Sinking line or floating line ?
2) Any particular flys i should use this time of the year.
3) should i braai a 2" T bone or  a thick Fillet steak lol....

Thanks in advance

:envy  Super place to spend a weekend, most enviable!! I've only fished there once before, flies that produced for me were black woolly buggers and papa roaches, fished on an intermediate line. The fish there are also not shy of taking DDD's off the surface, lots of fun! :tite

PS: go for a rump steak! w;k

I would have to agree on the Fillet steak, But preparation is key. This is how I would do my fillet.

1. Light your fire.
2. open and drink a beer.
3. Rub some salt into the meat.
4. Then grind some fresh black pepper, mix with crushed mustard seeds, 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds, mix thoroughly with one table spoon olive oil and rub into fillet.
5. open and drink a beer.
6. clean the grill properly, use half an onion.
7. open and drink a beer.
8. place fillet on fire. Braai till medium-rare. Medium at most.
9. place on plate and enjoy.
10. - 19. open loads more Beers and enjoy.
20. Sleep.

You should write a recipe book. You'll make millions!

Just one question, I'm not a big beer drinker, will a scotch on the rocks affect the flavour of the fillet at all?

Very important tip that could make or break your fishing! Never apply salt to the meat before sealing it. The salt will draw the moisture to the surface drying it out... Sorry can't help with the fishing :hehe:

If you drink a nasty whiskey YES, rather drink a Jameson or a JW Black label.

Viskop, next time organize a fly tying event with a braai and leave the braai to me.

For Stillwater/ Dams I would fish the Following

2 Nymphs Static under a Strike Indicator close to reeds/structure
One Nymph is a bright colour to attract the fish and the other is a PTN or GRHE. They will slam the PTN or GRHE.

You can use a floating line with a long leader and fish a heavy dropper and a small weighted or unweighted nymph on a NZ Rig. Cast it out, count to 10 and start retrieving very slow. This should give you fish. This is something I would do mid morning.

Then you have the streamers, Wooly Buggers, Damsels, Hamils Killers, Mrs. Simpson, small deceivers, Boobies(fly), etc that you can fish when nothing else works. Don't forget a Muddler minnow.l

Early and late afternoon I would fish some dries if you see rises.
Dries that work
CDC & Elk
Elk Hair Caddis
Humpies
Foam Beetles
Foam Hoppers
Stimulators

If you don't see rises, fish a Dry and dropper. Use an unweighted nymph below the dry. You will pick the fish up just below the surface if they don't slam the dry, they will hit the nymph/ emerger.

Oh, I would fish early morning 5-8am and then 17:00 - 19:00.
The rest of the day I would spend with the family.

Awesome place I had a blast there last year in April
Flies that worked for us

 DDD, hoppers on floating line
Boobies on a short leader with sinking line
orange an yellow streamers and dragons( pappa roach will be perfect)

Hope this helps. The place gets very cold when the wind piks up so tke som OBS and an extra jacket for the missus.

ET gave you all the flies so I'll comment on the steak.

5" rump steak, single 2kg piece

No spices no nothing over HOT fire. turn every three minutes onto all sides.  25 minutes and you're done medium rare. Then add salt and spices. It's better than fillet

Just got back from Leeukloof. Accomodation- My wife who is very fussy gave the place  ten out of ten. All the ladies in the group were impressed with the neatness and user friendliness of the chalet and said they will definitely come back. enjoyed the view from my patio as well as the walk down to kloof dam.

Fishing- No trout. Both my sons  and i fished hard on friday afternoon, saterday early morn and late afternoon and also this morning. Used sinking and floating lines. big flys and small flys, dry flies and nymphs as well as different lengths and thickness of tippets. We caught a few bass. my younger son hooked a finger size bass on a wooly bugger and it was immediately swallowed by a bass of about 1kg. Fought the bass for a bit and than it spat out the fingerling. Weather was very hot and humid(rained a little bit). Water was warm and suspect maybe trout where lying deep and not very active. Did not see a trout swimming in all four dam that were close to the chalets.Catch record register had no record of recent catches. Saw plenty tiny, tiny bass. Will definitely be back when it gets cooler as we have a score to settle with the elusive trout. All in all an enjoyable trip and will definitely recommend the chalet and hospitality to anybody.

The issue of the T bone steak and the fillet, put both of them on the braai. Boy what a chow.

Regards
Tyson

Hi Tyson
I am glad to hear you had a good time. Yes the trout is not eating when it is warm and humid. The week before was a brown trout been caught of 3.7kg in the small top dam but it was cold and windy. The dams are well stocked except the new big dam that must first settle out and get aquaculture that will be stocked next month. Looking forward to see you soon.
