Wire leader above Spoon for Snoek

Just a Question for those in the know.

When casting spoons for Snoek,how necessary is it to have a wire leader? And if you are using a wire leader,how have you rigged it up. Bearing in mind one would like to change the spoon as well without a huge rigg ma roll.

If you could share your ideas on this sort of rigg I would appreciate it.

I prefer flouro carbon and no wire

unless you like losing spoons the bite trace is needed. I use about 15cm of no4 piano wire onto which I tie about 1m of fluorocarbon, tied to the wire with an albright. the other end gets a small centro power swivel no 8, that makes up 1 complete trace.

Mike, why would one prefer flouro carbon on a spoon but steel on a bait trace?
Is it because a spoon is taken on sight rather than smell and sight like a bait trace?
Are you not bitten off on fluoro carbon? When Snoek "feed" on spoons, they go wild!

if the spoon is big enough and the retrieve very fast you might get lucky, but rather put it. on that retrieve the fish cant see the wire at all

Agree with Jean, when spinning for snoek I like useing small spoons (sprat spoons). As these been working best for me, one can realy make them jerk around nicely and also dosent spook the snoeks when cast near them... With these small spoons best to use a bite size steel trace of No 4 and no swivel, tie the steel wire on your leader using an albright trace... Also what I do is have about 5 sprats spoons ready on my boat, as the steel trace realy get abuse once you start catching snoek with them.... Also best to use braid line or 5kg mono line as one need get the spoon to work as soon it hit the water... Lot of people tend to slow down while spinning when they see a snoek chasing the spoon, what I normally do is when I see the shoal of snoek around, I bring my trawling bait a lot closer to the boat and while I'm spinning and see a snoek chasing my spoon I winch a LOT faster to the boat( try not to let your spoon jump out of the water). Then you will find that the snoeks have taken your trawling baits. As it normally a few snoek that will be chasing your spoons..

Eric are you tying the steel trace to braid or 5kg line.

Are you guys using a split ring pliers to change your spoons?

Todays spooning produced 3 Shad however the Seine netters got 8 Snoek including loads of very small fish that they kept.
Eish,what's the point I ask myself,anything to cover costs I suppose and throwing fish back as though they they just did not care if they survive or not but then again I don't think they do.  Sorry abt gng off track abit but it p.....s me off!!!

Off to Umdoni Point tomorrow hope we hook into a Queen!!

I have leaders on my braid and light tackle line.... The snoek were about  on the South Per tip and in the harbour by the Coaling area this morning...

Ok that explains why I did no get,I was shore based near the reef next to our netting friend.

How did you do with the Snoek?
