What is the best to do when the fish are busting the surface
« on: January 09, 2012, 02:23:52 PM »

I had huge shoals of GT busting the surface yesterday, so close i could have simply gaffed one on board. I was trolling Rapala X raps 20 & 30ft on the outside of the shoals and only one GT the whole afternoon. should you change to poppers or some sort of surface lure. I tried one squid with a bird but no luck either....
Further to that what lures are best suited to barracuds beacuase they are chowing my xraps faster than i can fix them.

One tactic I do when this occurs is to let more line out when trolling, then time your troll in front of the shoal so that you troll in front and through the shoal as opposed to next to them. Remembered, those GT's are focussed on that bait ball.

Buzz a Halco Roosta Popper straight over the shoal and retrieve it quickly through the middle... hold tight!!

If you find that they are not falling for it... Cast over the shoal, retrieve fast and then stop dead, leave it to float for about 5 seconds, then begin the retrieve again... you're sure to go on by triggering a reaction bite.

Needle nose plug  (GT Icecream) or a spoon on a quick retrieve normally does the trick for me Trolling may work but for me its much more fun and effective spinning when in this sort of situation.

Shallow runners, and poppers are excelent for trolling like that as are Kona's

My 2c:
Best thing to do is to drive your boat upwind of the action, turn side on to it at the edge of casting range and cut the motors, turn your motors into the wind. The wind will push you closer as you drift.

Now cast spoons, Onde Ondas or poppers into and around the baitball. You should get a few fish out on each drift through if there are a couple of you fishing.
When they are busting right on the surface like that there is no need to let spoons sink, just crank back, normally as fast as you can to get a hit.

Regarding the Barracuda, the Xraps are so deadly but like you said they take a lot of damage, your best option would be to stock up or look for something similar in the Halco or Strike Pro range which will be cheaper!

I know the feeling...

Did not know GT's are on the west coast.

I did target Jack Cravel and Senagal Jacks in Angola but could not connect...
