mono or braid
« on: December 06, 2011, 02:31:24 PM »
Hi guys

Ive been fishing with mono all my life and a few mates are trying to convert me to braid on a grinder. My question is, is it really worth it and does it make a difference? I hear that if you get stuck on rocks then you have to cut the line etc....
Any advice?

I always have and always will fish with mono, less expensive, longer lasting and if you just buy lighter mono you can reach your casting areas fine. Thats my 2cents of experience though, I know im one of the few people who dont like braid, thats just me  :-)

Braid definitely has some big advantages.

1) Zero stretch. This means that you will feel every bump and knock on your line. Particularly good for shy feeding fish. It does take some getting used to since without the stretch you can easily tear the hooks out.

2) Thinner diameter to breaking strain. This is good for 2 reasons.
Firstly casting distance is greatly increased due to the lower wind resistance and weight over the cast. It also creates less of a lip on your spool during the cast. If you remove a meter of for instance .50 mono from the spool and then remove a meter of .25 braid the gap created will be bigger on the .50 mono which means the line rubs on the spool as it peels off reducing casting distance. A tough concept to explain without a video!

The second advantage is that after a cast the line is less affected by wind and currents so you may just have the edge that gets you the fish while your mate blanks.

Braid does have certain disadvantages. It does cost far more than mono. The correct knots must be used. Due to its thinner diameter it has less abrasion resistance than the equivalent breaking strain mono. It is therefore a good idea to up the breaking strain a bit.

I love fishing with braid and have it on most of my reels. So hope this helps you decide

Thanks for the reply guys.... I see that there are various types of braid out there. Is there a particular braid that is worth recommending?
Cheers

My advice is always to stick with the known brands. Fireline is my personal favorite though tuffline, power pro and spiderwire seem to be good alternatives. I'm sure I'm forgetting some other brands though so if anyone else wants to chime in please do so.
