Launched off Durban an ran to the 50m line off Umdloti. Was smoked by a very big wahoo on a a cona only to be bittten off near the boat  after a very hard fight.@#$ I really battled to lift him from under the boat and placed too much pressure with the line on the side of mouth. My first Wahoo hook-up and I could not believe how much line was running off my reel whilst bringing in the other two lines. I will have to convert my conas to steel wire especially when pulling them around that waters. What a fantastic day to be on the water.

You only need steel wire on your hook-set inside your Kona for Wahoo

Nice couta that well done, unfortunately I left yesterday for Nelspruit, Witbank then Polokwane on business for the week, back on Friday so hopefully Saturday will be fishable.
A bad days fishing is better than sitting at home moping.

.

Alfu, I take it you had stopped the boat when fighting the wahoo? If you leave your boat idling "just" in gear, it helps to keep the fish near to the surface. Biggest dropped cuda (that still haunts me) I was on the rod and the tempory skipper who my mom and dad were responsible for, thought it funny to not listen to me and keep the motors idling. Five long runs deep and as I got just within gaffing reach, the wire snapped due to the cuda circling under the boat. Think of the guys fighting marlin, the boat doesn't get stopped as you can imagine raising 500kg from deep while bobbing in one spot.

Good luck next time!

I never stop the boat, that's a sure way to lose a fish

Thanks Timothy. You are 100% correct. After following the fish for a while to gain line i did go into neutral when the fish was nearing the boat. This must be why I battled to bring him up. Should have moved forward past the fish perhaps and thus removing the line drag on the side of the mouth knowing I do not have a wire trace. Thanks for the advice. Am am sure this is a good learning for other members ws well.
