Report Tuesday 17 February Aliwal shoal TripSo Tuesday morning I met my crew for the day with 5 very excited anglers looking forward to there first deep sea trip. So after a bit of exercise first thing from pushing the boat in, we headed South from Warners towards Umkomaas. Was not long before we had our first take on the short rigger.. sadly though the line parted even before we could get to the rod, but it was a nice Bull Dorado of about 15kg or so I would guess, as we saw him jumping just behind the boat. On close inspection we realized that the eye insert had chipped and was slicing through the line so we removed the insert as a temp solution and carried on fishing. We stayed in the area for a while and had a good hook up with a Bonnie of about 5kg which gave us a good run for our money. Shortly after landing the Bonnie we had a nice little inspection on the short rigger again this time from a small sailfish which i had spotted following us earlier, and after a couple of attempts at the lures she decided to rather head off and leave us alone. Just as we got close to the Aliwal shoal we had a nice double up on Dorado, guys had some great fun as this was the first time they had caught anything in saltwater and after a couple of great acrobatic displays they both landed a Queen Dorado of around 8kg each. A short while after that we hooked into a nice small Wahoo of around 10kg followed by a triple up on Dorado shortly thereafter with 2 Queens and one Bull. After all the excitement we decided to head out to some reefs of Warners to try our hand at some bottom fishing. Which landed us a couple of pan sized Slinger and Soldiers, we also lost one decent sized fish during the fight which was a bit of a bummer but hey you cant win them all!!
