Launched yesterday with my mate Shaun on "Mershore" the forecast predicted 7-10knt SW but by the time we were on the water it was already pushing 10knt with a huge groundswell. Our plan was to target dorado at the Sheppie colour line but the large swell and persistent SW nearly changed our minds. On arrival at the Sheppie mouth we found clean water and hardly any colour line. We were only two-up on the boat so started off with a simple 4 rod spread (3 rods with small softy konas with strips and one halco in the wash) with one teaser line. We putted around until we found the colour line way inside (18-25m depth) and started working it. The current was a strong 2knt N-S current which was ripping against the dirty water line, lots of life around including flying fish, turtles and dolphins. No takers in the first hour and a half but on the turn of the tide we had a hook up on a decent bull dorado which fell off after 3 minutes. We reset the lines and within two minutes hooked up on the cow that was in the same area, it was boated easily and we continued. After another half an hour we had chaos on deck, triple hookup! With a bit of teamwork and lots of bobbing and weaving we got all three dorado on deck. We decided to persist for one more pass as the sea was huge out deep and inshore was still manageable. This paid off as we managed one more good dorrie on the shotgun lure. A quick trip to Protea was an eye opener - 2.5m swell with huge holes not very safe at all. Our goal was a quick yellowfin, we did one drift with the chum and had a double hookup, I managed to get my tuna in and Shaun got a nice skipjack. What a lekker day and good to see the dorado here in good numbers.

Nice fish, well done.
A bad days fishing is better than sitting at home moping.

Thanks. It's very easy to catch them using this method:
Use small sized softy kona's like the Williamson saifish catcher (4inch) or Pulsator Strip teaser (4inch) rigged with nylon coated steel wire attached to a single 7/0 hook and albright onto 100lb mono (steel just for under the skirt). Now cut strips of chokka into 15cmx2cmx5mm pieces and attach to your wire bite trace with Ghost Cotton. The strip sits up against the back of the kona's head and protudes out the back of the skirt around 50mm. This is a hard wearing strip you can pull for hours and has a great action in the water. Sometimes it can last for more than one fish.  w;k

The DSBC Couta Festival is on 25th & 26th of April. We'll probably haul the boat down leaving Nelspruit early on the morning of Thursday 23rd and camping at the club again.

We launched port edward today.

Managed 1 yellow fin and 1 dorado.. Both of 7kg...
We dropped another 2 dorado and 2 yellowfin, 1 yellow fin of which I estimate was over 18kg's.

Predicted NE for the next couple days, so won't be fishing I don't think.

Quite a few bek and cracker being caught down this side.
Water temp of around 26deg, so things looking good!

Got my first  :billf: ever and it was off my boat on the 29th at number 1 on the way in from the deep.
It picked me up on my 7" shotgun kona. I was fishing for dorries and tuna so the set up was light.
TLD 25 with 15 kg line and a 16 kg fluoro leader. I had a inexperienced guy with me who had to take control of the boat whilst I boxed with the fish. Well after 1h30 I remembered that I had a stand up harness on board and swopped my bucket for it, my arms were buggered. The 25's drag got cooked so I had to hold the spool and line with my fingers, then the handle started to get hard to turn. Any way after following and fighting it for 17km and a total of 2h55 I got it to the boat, the leader was on the rod when the line popped. The first of many I hope, what a day.
