Hey guys I really hate trebles with a passion so on all my new lures I will be changing to singles. My problem is that most of the eyes on hooks are too small for split rings. Are there any brands that have bigger eyes

Eagle Claws have large eyes Brad but I dont trust the quality have had a few rust on me after using them once

look at some assist hooks instead or maybe try find some Mustads with bigger eyes...

Try Livebait hooks.

Alternatively, make wire rings with piano wire, or use dacron... similar to a jig

I have the same problem. One solution is to fix the hooks to the lure using wire. Fritz has a tut on the forum about that. I also used Daihittchi (SPELLING!!!) - the short shank (live bait) hooks, but their shanks are rather thick making it difficult to get the eye into the split ring without bending the splitring.

I thought about using the wire rings but I find it a mission to make them that small. Ill have to look out in the shop to see what there is. I have heard guys mention the gamaktsu soi ring hooks anyone used these?

For smaller lures I use oval split rings. They work well but I'm not so sure about strentgh when a big fish should take it.

guys if anyone is still interested. The Lureshop.co.za under the saltwater section has some really nice singles. Pricy but its what is needed. Last time i enquired he was out of shot and hav just emailed Rolf to find out if he has more

On my small lures I`m using small rings and 2/0 or 3/0 Mustad Kendal Rounds.

VMC salmon siwash is the one you're after

this is the version with the open eye, but its exactly the same you can see how wide it is

Morning All I am also trying to replace all my trebles with singles, but am having a problem with getting the bottem hook to sit straight. What is the easiest way to keep the hook point facing in the right direction, the only thing I can think of is either opening the hook eye and leaving out the split ring, (but think this might weaken the hook eye), or putting in an extra split ring, (just doesn't look right, hook flaps around all over the place) Thanks

If you are going to open the hook eye try and anneal (soften) the metal first by making it red hot and let it cool down slowly in the air - otherwise the hook may snap off. Open the hook eye just enough to slip over the ring and bend closed again.
Due to the tight radius of the hook eye, it will still require a massive force to bend it open. (Ie. it should still be strong enough)
Test the strength afterwards.
The only problem is that the rust protection will be destroyed if the hook is heated.

I also use double split rings on nylon plugs as suggested by Barry Wareham.
