Transkei Splash and Dash end July 2011 - reports
« on: August 01, 2011, 11:09:56 AM »
When "Fish2DVD" (my son) and I arrived at 7h30 on Saturday at the cabin, the guys had been fishing since 4am at Brazen Head already. See pic below. Fritz told me on the phone that we could join them but I would need a 4X4 to reach them. I was not sure whether the Subaru Forester  would make it and we decided to wait for them and do some spinning and scratching in the pools near the cabin.
I did feel a bit guilty for not joining them but Reefz told me, upon their return that it was the best best decision I had made. To get back to their cars, they had to crawl on all fours up the mountain (the furthest point you can see on the pic) due to the steepness.  No doubt a lot is going to be said about this experience by the guys. It was agreed that, f you can claim to have fished Brazen Head, you automatically belong to some exclusive R&S fishing club. Fritz, no doubt, is as strong as an ox and super fit.
Yesterday we fished at "Small Brazen" - the further of the 2 points just before Brazen in the pic. A variaty of small fish were taken but I will leave the reporting to the other guys. When Fish2 DVD & I left at 12 pm, nothing spectacular had been caught.
For me personally it was an eye opener to experience the art of R&F the way the experts do it. I decided to spend some more time fishing form now on and spend less time in the workshop making stuff and talking about fishing.
I also, under a seperate thread, would like to report on Fritz's and Reefz's amazing driving skills on apalling roads.
Thanks Fritz, for the unselfish assistance in getting us back to the cabin yesterday. Credt to you.
Many pics were taken by the guys on this amazing trip and Fish2DVD has taken video footage. He will be posting Youtube clips on the forum during the week. An edited version will be made available on DVD for Homie to take back to GP for those who want one next week.
What an amazing bunch of guys. Thanks to everyone!!!

The Kei has some of the most picturesque and serene places in SA ! Miles and miles of nothing but mountains and sea !

It is beautiful and is not called the Wild Coast without reason. It was my son's first visit and he said the coastline reminded him of scenes from Jurassic Park.

Know of one grey, a russel snapper and plenty of shad. No big fish were taking bait.

Back in the land of the living... what an epic trip with a great bunch of blokes... fishing was absolutely dismally abysmal... probably due to the fact that every mountain top we drove through was still covered in snow, even on the drive back last night. Mornings were bitterly cold as was the sea temp.
Driving conditions through heavy mud and clay was difficult to say the least, but dragging a trailer through serious 4x4 conditions on the way to spots just added to the adventure. Fritz in a 2x4 dented his bakkie a few times after being thrown around in the slippery conditions... crazy driving skills!!
Fritz will follow with the full report...
Guys fished really hard, the climbs back up the mountains were agonizingly painful, most can't walk today they're so stiff and sore... fish caught... Mike got a small Salmon on day1 evening,  Marthin got a small Gray early on day 2, then it all went quiet. Lots of scratching done... Shad, Blacktail... etc etc  I'm glad to say that no-one blanked (if Shad beats a blank!).
Thanks to everyone for a great trip... now to visit the Physio....

Went there in 2001, caught a few juvenile hammerheads (10-15kgs).Climbing out of there is quite an effort and those rural roads if you can call them roads were just tracks and we did take wrong turns at times
as we got there at night
