Riggig lures with singles
« on: July 15, 2011, 09:50:04 PM »
Hi Guys.
I am in the throws of converting most of my lures to single hooks.
Two Questions:
1: In order to get the back hook facing up one needs to use 2 split-rings. I have tried with some hooks to twist them in a vice to orientate the eye to accomodate one split ring, most makes snap. If one heats it and twists and lets it cool naturally, will it significantly weaken the shaft in having changed the molecular structure of the steel??
2: The two belly hooks, must they be put on the split-ring back to back allowing them to protrude further out or face to face crossing over and being more stream-lined with more movement.
Some learned input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx.
Take it easy.....if you get it easy.......take it again.

Item 1: Anealing the hook wil certainly cause it to bend open under stress - even if heat may be applied to the eye section of the hook only. The hook will also immediatey start to rust after application of heat. I would use 2 split rings as mentioned.

Item 2: Are these 2 hooks in the same position on the lure or one behind the other? If they are in the same position I would have only 1 hook with the business end of the hook facing forward. If one is behind the other - both sharp ends facing forward.

Hi Dooma - on the back hook it is well worth getting hold of some Decoy JS and PS hooks which have the eye in line with the hook unlike the traditional hooks which are at a right angle and need double rings etc. PM me and I will tell you where to get them in SA as dont want breach any advertising rules. They are excellent top end Japanese hooks and I have used them on Ondas right up to big stickbaits.

The middle hooks - on the bigger poppers I use two back to back and just use a cable tie to hold them but on smaller lures and stickbait/swimbait type lures the key is not to compromise the action of the lure. So either a single with the point facing forward ( else when it swims it will hit the belly), trebles ( Owner ST 66 or 76 is what I use) or two back to back. On the smaller lures a single on the back often suffices ( as with an Onda). No one system is best - the some swim better with a treble on the belly some are okay with back to back singles etc, etc.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanx Guys, that certaily does help a lot, I was suspicious of the anealing process so will stay well clear. These decoy hooks seem to be the answer. The problem I was having on the belly tribles, I am using a very bright Maria lure which has got a hell of a lot of action and is most certainly producing the goods, YFT, Snoek, Bonnies etc. Because of the extreme action of this wonderful little lure, the two prongs on the trebble are gouging a groove up either side of the lure, hence wanting to place singles. There are a good number of spoons on the market where singles have been placed face to face on the end on one split-ring and cross-over, good for not snagging on rocks and profiled not to affect swimming action, hence me thinking they might work for the belly format on the lure. It does make sense though to have them back to back or go the decoy hook route and have it facing straight down, good one
Thanx so much for the advice Guys, appreciated.
