Hi Tommo,

BIG FAN!!!

I have been trying to get hold of the Rapala Glidin' Rap in tht colour you guys used, BUT cannot find it!!! According to Rapapla; they discontinued the Glidin' rap. I got my hands on a silver one, and a green back with te strips along the body, with orange belly. Would the colour make such a big difference?

I am new to the site and to artificial lure fishing, and at this stage the lures are catching me and not yet the fish!!

I want to try in our rivers and estuaries along the Garden Route area. We have a piece of heaven here with all the different locations to choose from, but still it will take an informed hand to catch the fish.

Thank you

Regards
Wimpie

Hi Wimpie, welcome to Ultimate Angling! Good to have you onboard! We actually caught kob in that system on a couple of different colours. I am of the belief that colours may play an important role at times, but the size, shape and movement of the lure are far more important. Well done on getting your hands on some Glidin' Raps, they are getting hard to find. I only have one left, having given a few away after that shoot and thinking I could get more, then finding them out of production....

The Glidin' Rap is best used quite slowly. For this reason it works better in a closed river system where there is not any current to mess with the action of the lure. I would recommend casting it out and allowing it to sink for a while (best to use it over a sandy bottom, you don't want to snag up on rocks!) Then bring it back by twitching the rod, or sweeping the tip to the side, then reeling up the slack. It will change directions with each sweep or twitch and has a beautiful gliding action through the water. It does not have a traditional wobble, such as the lipped Rapala lures have, so you may feel a bit put off in the beginning, but don't let that worry you, the fish love its unpredictable movements. Kob tend to hold fairly close to the bottom, so when you work the lure slowly it stays in that zone. If you move it too fast it will come up higher in the water column.
I would advise giving the lure a good test swim in some clear water (I use my swimming pool as a testing tank) and get a good feel for the sink rate of the lure, what it does when you twitch the rod etc. This will give you more confidence when fishing the lure in the lovely rivers you have down there.
You are very lucky to live in an area with a wide choice of great fishing venues right on your doorstep. Remember that catching fish on lures requires a great deal of patience and perseverance, but once you start catching it gets easier and easier. Stick at it and you will get the rewards. All the best with your quest, and I hope to see some pictures of great fish that you have caught posted here on Ultimate Angling one of these days!

Thanks Tommo, you and your program; Inside Angling inspired me to go and try lures, and practicing catch and release. It actually gives great pleasure hearing and seeing other anglers moaning when I release the Grunters, and they have not even had a decent bite!

Hi Tommo. We have read yr article on the Glid'in Rap & is for sure a winning lure to have. Any advice on the size & preferred colour ?

I see they are obtainable in SA but at a price of +-R450 - 600 - MAD PRICING. We may get from overseas suppliers at $20 or another supplier @$14.
Have you found a local supplier yet ?

Thks RM , but Basil Manning doesn't have , MIAS out of stock & the importing of Glidin Raps has been discontinued accord to Rapala distributors.
Still got stock of the 12CM @ GANIS @ R93.50 & one T.shop in KZN @ R74. Seems to be scarce.

@ Half Pint - where did u get from ?

Hi Guys, sorry I missed this thread. Glidin Raps are difficult to find, as Rapala VMC SA stopped bringing them in a few years ago. My advice is to buy them when you see any old stock in the stores. Some stores have them in the bargain bin, as most guys don't know how to fish them and don't buy them. The other option that will do the same job is the Sebile Stick Shadd 155mm if you can find the sinking version. Also hard to find though...

@Tommo

I remember a discussion about pelagic and resident Garrick in Durban Bay, and physical differences between the two. Got this fella this morning on a topwater lure and was wondering if he may be resident, considering the time of year...

Hi Jball7204, I think that some juvenile and subadult fish do remain in some of our estuary systems throughout the year as resident fish. They seem to be present year round in most systems to some degree. Well done on your catch, that looks like it gave you some fun!

Thanks Tommo.

For sure! I got him with an x-rap walk on a 7' Daiwa Crossfire with a Shimano 2500 reel and 6lb Nanofil with an 8lb flouro leader.

I thought it was a pickhandle originally, then I changed my mind to small GT/Bluefin when he went on a few nice runs. Super surprised when he actually jumped out the water and we saw what he was. Swam off strongly too.

Hopefully many more to come...
