First Fly Session Of The Year @ Footloose
« on: April 18, 2011, 09:22:46 AM »
Morning  :ult:

So yesterday I was back at Footloose Trout Farm after they had finally stocked some Rainbow Trout on Friday between 250 and 450 grams. Was super keen to hook a few as my fly tackle hadnt been used since October last year  :cnfzd ... I went there with Mrs. Simpson and met up with Lunker and his wife who had been there since 7, I arrived at about 7.30, it was freezing overcast and rainy, perfect conditions for trout! I had a few casts and put on a Zulu, my go to fly in low light conditions and my second cast I had a on off, threw it straight back and I was  :ondad: my first Rainbow in a long time, pushing the 300 gram mark, was a beautiful fish... That would be the last Trout I caught that day  :sadd after that it was the Lunker show, he proceeded to catch 8 fish in a couple of hours, he got 2 on a Zulu and 6 on a Sir Rodents Killer... The fish were hitting that fly like crazy, by the time Lunker lent me one the fish went off the bite... He had a few more on offs but unfortunately no more landed fish, a nice tally though!

During this time I was teaching Mrs. Simpson how to cast a fly rod and methods she could use, she didnt enjoy it that much because of the tangles you do get in when you are first starting out but by the end of the day she was casting pretty well!

I managed to land 2 Largemouth Bass after my Trout as well which was a first for me, never caught a Bass on fly and the one was about 350-400 grams, which I think is a pb for me  :happ: the first Bass was about the size of the first 'Little green Fish' I ever caught a few years a go, it was maybe 6-7 cm long  :clwn was a beautuiful fish though and considering that was my first Bass on fly I was chuffed, it was taken on a GRHE (My go to fly when the sun is out)... The bigger Bass was caught on a Zulu... After that I went to the Kurper dam and hooked 2 Vleis of about 12-13cm on the smallest fly I had in my tackle box... Both fish were on for a few seconds and then shook the hook, Im still waiting for that first Kurper on fly  :hnthnt: All in all it was an awesome day's fishing!

Lunker 8 Rainbow Trout 300-450 grams
WK 1 Rainbow Trout 250 grams + 2 Largemouth Bass 30 - +/- 400 grams

All fish were safely revived and released... Here are the pics:

G. Awesome report.

Its the first stocks of the season. Bigger stuff to come as winter settles in.

Everyone says stocked venues are easy! Yesterday prooved differently.

I will be there again on Friday and Monday, will add photos.

I think I was just as surprised as you because I have never really caught on red and black flies there before. I think as winter settles in and the stocks increase the usual flies will be taken again.
