Barcos de macaneta
« on: March 02, 2011, 12:44:04 PM »
Hi All

I will be going to Moz (macaneta Island) over the Easter week and would appreciate your advice on the following. I am taking my boat with (swift 165)

*As Maputo is only 30 km south can I get good quality fuel for the boat from say Marracuene town or must I go to maputo to buy fuel, i understand there are restrictions on amount to take into Moz
*I have no idea of the fishing in the bay or area , do I have to run north for better success
*Should I take bait from here ( mackerel and Sardines )
*Are there any restrictions on jigging applicable to the area

Thanks in advance

Jared

Hi jared,

Welcome to UA!

- There is a new petrol station in Marracuene, so yes, you can get fuel there;

- Will you be surf launching or going out through the river mouth? What will you be targeting? I can give you some marks to explore...

- Take some bait....  but there is plenty of live bait there... also, you can get bait from the locals...

- No restrictions with regards to jigging... except of course those regarding protected species (http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php/topic,648.0.html)

Shout if you need further info and please take plenty of pics...

Hi Guys

Thanks for the warm welcome

- I will scout the launches before hand and decide from there.
- Species that are to be targeted will start by pulling a spread for the odd game fish that might be gracious enough to jump on a line , but am taking the family so need to keep them entertained hence the jigging question , but will also try popping if available.
I would really appreciate if I can take you up on the "marks offer" John F  , as getting this will up my potential success rate.
- Will sabiki rigs work in the area for livies?

If you taking the family then I would suggest you launch through the river mouth...

Ok, this is couta territory... and you can also get the occasional tuna, dorado etc... be prepared to travel up to 15 nm one way...

Sabikis will be ok for the livies...

Will PM you some marks.

Hi All

Just some feedback on my trip.

Left Good Friday and it took 18 hours to travel the 640 kms to Barcos da macaneta on the Macaneta Island ( Lebombo border had a queue of 17km at one stage)

Day one bought fuel and loaded boat for Sunday Launch. Solly the Resort manager was very helpful gave me a set of co-ords for the start of the Cut fields reef that runs on and off about three kms ,  It links up with one cords John f gave me (thanks again)
Sunday morning the whole family awake and raring to go  even my five year old daughter.
I launched off the beach at around 7 am, the tide being favorable but also because the resort has about 10 staff members that push the boat into the surf for you so it was really easy to drop the motors and go and not having to worry about the boat being pushed around in the surf.
10 minutes in and Daughter wants out as the ride is about 14 km out and the northerly was gusting making the boat a bit wet with spray , returned to the beach and the staff were waiting Dropped mommy and daughter off turned the boat and off again. Now just the boys being Grandpa(72) me and my son (8). Caught our first offshore fish off the boat being greater barracuda(6.5KG) and some couta (6kg).
Arriving back after fishing is an absolute pleasure. You basically beach your boat and wait about 10 minutes before the tractor arrives , hitches your trailer and winches your boat onto it. The tractor then takes you back to the camp and you sit back all the way. At the camp the House boy comes cleans and cuts your catch while your Boat boy washes down your boat and tackle for the next day.
For the week we launched offshore every day except last thursday as the southerly was pumping but went to the river and had an awesome day catching in the river.
I can honestly say it was an unforgettable experience and will return,  catching fish every day was a bonus but the resort made it a pleasure to be there
from the Owner (Staffie) to the guys launching they made it easy to relax. The units are airconditioned and fully kitted out (the misses was pleasantly surprised at R275 per person )

Things to note of this resort is that 4X4 is required as there is some soft sand to negotiate, be prepared to wait at the ferry . Fishing reefs are a reasonable distance minimum 4o kms round trip but don't be scared to trawl a pink halco from the start as the couta had a flavour for this particular lure. bait can be bought from the netters off the beach before launching

Cheers

Jared

@ Jared  :shre: nice to hear a positive report coming out of Macaneta.
Having the staff help with the launch must of been great as the shore dump there can be hectic.

Hi Guys

See the photos attached , the launches were very easy using the team as they are very experienced as the camp has a charter using a big yeld cat that launched almost seven days a week weather permitting. I was able to do all my launches on one motor even at high tide, but I guess it was leading to neap tides so a lot easier. Spring high would be different and also the beach changed over the week to becoming a short shore dump that also complicated things. But the tractor was on standby  to haul your boat clear of the waves once beached.

Regards
