In all honesty from what I have seen on Saturday, I think the Vaal will only fish really well after winter. The reason for that is that there are no Caddis Pupa around. All the drift wood that passed me or even when snagging and pulling the flies out, I would only see Mayflies. There where Adult Caddis around, but its still early days. I reckon most of the insect life got washed down stream as well as the fish. There were a couple of fish around, but not like it should have been. As the insect life pics up, so will the fishing. The visibility was not that great, but we have caught fish in these sort of conditions.

Visibility should also be super by September/October. This winter might also produce some good catches on the dry. As for now, I wouldn't bother going out to the Vaal soon.

Thanks Chaps for an absolute cracker of a day! My first fly fishing experience will go down as one of those very special moments in life. I got revved properly by a Yellow that unfortunately fell off but every body fishing the lower Barrage area heard me scream, goose bump stuff. Did manage to catch my first Vaal fish on fly with my last cast of the day after taking the Mother of all tumbles over a submerged rock.

Mussel Cracker you’re a legend, the chow went down lekker. To the rest of the guys that made it just showed me again the calibre of Ultimate Angler members you would not find a nicer bunch of Blokes.

I'm surprised that Rory and Louis actually made this one... their middle fingers must have been quite stiff from all the overuse in pics posted on BBM on Friday night! Some classic pics!  :hyst:

I had to babysit my boy on Saturday so could not make it. It had really nothing to do with stiff middle fingers or headaches. True
